Re: Mental health consequences of ERE

You seem to have highlighted the difference between FIRE and ERE. FIRE solves for income issues, and ERE solves issues in general. Exactly. Even though I know more about withdrawal rates than your average investor, all the data in the world never seemed to calm my anxiety over having "enough&q...

Re: Portfolio Charts

Hey Classical Liberal. I may not be posting much lately, but I definitely check in here all the time. You guys are the best. Yeah, it has been a really tough year for pretty much all portfolios. I wrote this in July when things were clearly going downhill, and it still applies: Halfway to Nowhere: 2...

Re: Sets being subsets of themselves

The concept reminds me of the proposal that every subatomic particle contains a full universe of its own, and our own known universe lies within one particle of something even larger. Even if the whole system is infinitely large and infinitely small without looping back on itself, the entire concept...

Re: Non-US equivalent of iBonds and TIPS?

All else equal, it seems that a directly held inflation linked bond would be more likely to protect from inflation while preserving principle than, say, a directly held non-inflation-linked bond or a bond ETF or a stock index ETF. It depends on the inflation. The thing about inflation-linked bonds ...

Re: The postmodern era of investing

The anti-ESG seems like a different dynamic, closer to memestonks. They're bought as part of an identity or a protest, whereas the ESG dynamic is more about "making a difference". This should affect the degree to which agents are willing to back their position. This implies that despite t...

Re: Rational data driven investment advice - the all world stock index

This is the same issue I have with Tyler's site in that you can get caught up in the details rather than the principles derived from data that relates to good investing. Tyler's site is the best. It's awesome. It's just that you need to understand that you are investing for the future 20-50 years r...

Re: Rational data driven investment advice - the all world stock index

My take is that an all world stock index (the most diversified stock index you can buy) will outperform any other investment strategy from a risk adjusted perspective over the longer term. Does anyone have any data or facts to refute this statement ? The key qualifying term here is "risk adjus...

Re: Tactics For Dealing With Predatory Relatives In Old Age

How to explain that I have recent knowledge of this even if I don't want to get into details... In my experience, the number one thing to look out for is not a predatory relative or a court-appointed agent of the state but the spouse of the individual who needs help. A malicious person taking advant...

Re: Loving your job = FI?

Let's say you have a job that you love - a job they would do even if they were able to live off your passive income. Aren't you then FI already? The job is then not really a job, so you won't really work anymore, you are kind of retired even with the job. Loving your job just means you're happy at ...

Re: Objectivity is an Asset

Beyond letting our current pessimism blind us to progress, people also have a knack for placing their own fears on a pedestal to the point where their parents or grandparents would just chuckle. Not to pick on @plantingtheseed (nobody is immune), but this juxtaposition made me scratch my head: "...

Re: Anyone on Medicaid?

We have been on ACA coverage for a while now, and decided early on to get good at manipulating our taxable income to choose our own ACA coverage rather than rely on Medicaid. Even when our work income was zero, between dividends, interest, and deliberate capital gains management it wasn't too hard t...

I'm glad you guys find this stuff as interesting as I do! Although part of me smiles the widest when I think about how an ERE board zones in on the real-life taste of the carrots. :) @Slevin: The obvious answer to your gold question is to buy a gold ETF like IAU, but that won't meet your physical re...

Re: Psychological withdrawal rate

That's fair. I'm probably suffering from my own bubble a bit, as the types of engineers I've spent my career working with are admittedly at least a standard deviation high on the creativity bell curve. I've known plenty of equation-followers, too. So maybe my point is more about personality than car...

Re: Psychological withdrawal rate

ERE should increase PWR, because ERE reduces dependence on money in general, but I see a lot of FIRE and ERE online community have very low PWR. Maybe high PWR people with renaissance skills become entrepreneurs and either become millionaires or blow up. So PWR might be a bigger barrier to retireme...

Re: Nausea from Virtual Reality

My only experience with VR was a few minutes of Beat Saber at a party. No issues there, but it could simply be because of the nature of the game and the low exposure time. I do have plenty of experience with motion sickness. I'm a long-time gamer, but I'm completely incapable of playing first person...

Re: Is living in a house anti-ERE?

This all seems anti-ERE. From an ERE perspective, a place like Hong Kong or a buildings like the Falowiec in Gdansk, Poland (half-a-mile long residential building housing around 6000 people: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falowiec) sound ideal. And yet, it seems to me that most of the American membe...
