Re: Tyler9000's Journal

Post a picture of the view! Unfortunately there are enough recognizable landmarks that posting a picture would likely count as self-doxxing my home address. But imagine the most picturesque high-rise city view you can think of, and it probably isn't too far off. Considering what other comparable re...

Re: Tyler9000's Journal

New Views So the bad news is that my previously described elderly cat situation worked itself out naturally. There was no way around the temporary sadness, but 16 years is a very good run and it was her time. But the good news is that with that burden lifted, our self-imposed hiatus on revisiting o...

Re: Please help me ensure I'm thinking about this properly

Assuming the settlement payout is all at once (and not scheduled out over time), then your #4 assumption sounds right. BRK taxes are a little simpler than other investing options because it does not pay a dividend. Regarding #2: When you sign up for Obamacare and claim a subsidy ahead of time, the I...

Re: Looking for stress management advice

@jacob — You should really consider becoming a “personality consultant” if there is such a thing. Your knowledge on this topic is truly impressive. And thanks for the links. I know I’ve been skeptical about over-dependence on Myers-Briggs in the past, but the functional stack descriptions really do ...

Re: Looking for stress management advice

One thing I’ve learned the hard way is that stress and anxiety are two different things. Stress is your natural reaction to a difficult outside force, while anxiety is the internal negative feedback loop that allows your mind to spiral out of control and transform even minor external stressors into ...

Re: Portfolio Charts

@ Brute & Jacob -- I'm really careful about presenting information that I think could be misinterpreted by over-eager investors, and there's some nuance to how sampling methods can skew the results with something like this. I'll have to think it through to make sure the output communicates the right...

Re: Portfolio Charts

They were always US REITs, and the calculator simply translated the numbers to local returns just like it does now. The new label just makes it more clear to avoid any confusion. That said, a good global REIT fund is also dominated by US holdings so the numbers will be reasonably accurate for that a...

Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

Yeah, I also couldn't finish the article. The editor must have taken the day off. While I do appreciate some of the points about the way the 9.9% finds ways to create barriers behind them (building restrictions in the Bay Area to keep real estate prices artificially high come to mind), overall the a...

Re: Portfolio Charts

Hmm... it's working fine for me. I know MS OneDrive occasionally has regional server issues, so maybe give it a little time to sort itself out. There shouldn't be anything new in there that would account for slower performance on its own.

Thanks!

Beyond the interface update there's also a ton of new data. European investors may be especially interested in the full assortments of World and European indices, so be sure to check it out.

Re: Tyler9000's Journal

No worries. I definitely don't believe one path is suitable for all people. Everyone is different. To the extent that my comment reads as defending the puritan work ethic, I really only meant to critique the mindset that any appearance of ease is a result of unattainable aptitude or circumstance rat...

Re: Tyler9000's Journal

Easy Mode Back when I was a young engineer, I worked for a while in a very large company subdivided into so many sites and sub-groups that it was hard to keep up with it all. My DW actually worked at the same company and in a similar engineering role but at a different site, and it was always kinda...

@SavingWithBabies -- You've read the ERE book, understand it to a level where you can think about it critically and apply independent concepts to your own situation, actively engage in meaningful conversations, and are open to feedback. Target audience or not, you're a good audience. :) I think Jaco...

Re: Loan to a family member

I think you're a good person for wanting to help your family. That said, I'm not sure I'd do it myself. 1) You're being asked to help someone purchase a home she can't afford. Even with a solid job and the best intentions, I'm highly skeptical of her ability to pay you back. 2) As Jacob mentioned, y...

Re: Help me find out what makes me unemployable, please.

I choosed material Engineering, because to me, materials are the key to every technological progress. We don't name ages with materials just randomly. I didn't wan't to specialize, that's why I choosed materials (lot of physics, chemistry, simulation, maths, everything). I hate specialization, beca...

Re: investment costs

@CountHigh -- yeah, those ERs aren't great but they're also not completely out of line with typical 401k options in the US. At some point you just have to do the best you can with your available options. Given your difficulties with buying a gold fund, I might suggest that you revisit your objection...

Re: Is frugality for the rich?

Setting aside the issue of whether frugalwoods is intentionally deceptive about their income (I've never read them and don't know), the problem with the basic premise of the article is that the author compares a single successful family to the average millennial to conclude that the average young pe...
