Re: Podcast: Worry of facing envy from friends family after reaching FI

Yes, this is an issue. But in my experience the root cause very often misdiagnosed by the retiree. The conflict is most easily caused a lack of emotional intelligence on the part of the retiree combined with understandable enthusiasm to share an exciting accomplishment. It's easy to put yourself in ...

Re: Portfolio Charts

@Tyler, can the Portfolio Charts super fans get an update on the state of the site? Do you see it as being in "set it and forget it mode" now that you have a new part time job? Are you getting offers to buy it? Have the Bogleheads and MMM'ers started a petition yet to make you remove any portfolios...

Judging by the people I've met who decided to pick up a second language, I'm inclined to believe that the most effective way is to date someone who speaks Spanish. ;)

I don't yet have a fully-formed opinion on the actual content of the offending Google letter, but this is one of the more thorough and thoughtful articles I've seen so far. Re: Choo choo - all aboard the Trump Train

BTW, was Khan ever invited to the street corner to drink beer with the guys in King of the Hill? I believe so. But he was generally disliked because he moved to the neighborhood from California, brought with him a massive superiority complex, and constantly called everyone rednecks and hillbillies ...

@Dragline -- As someone who grew up in the town King of the Hill was based on and who later moved to Silicon Valley, I know where you're coming from but strongly disagree with your conclusion. I found people in the Bay Area far more ignorant to southern life and culture than the other way around, an...

In the past several months I've been working on a new writing/research project (no comments) which has essentially taken over my focus. I'm turning into a total hermit. My neighbors are beginning to inquire "where I've been?" (Answer: In my room with a stack of books. 27 books read in the past 3 mo...

Great metaphor! Thinking of trading like surfing explains a lot of the behavior I see in a family member who currently gets 100% of his income from options trading. The dry spells are really tough on him precisely because he's smart enough to remained disciplined. Feeling forced to trade in a poor m...

Re: How do Taxes Affect the Permanent Portfolio?

For gold, you would only pay the collectibles rate (28%) if your income tax bracket was 28% or above. If your taxable income is less than 28%, you'd owe taxes on the gold's capital gains based on whatever your income tax bracket is. So 10%, 15%, or 25%. I did not realize this! This is actually acti...

Re: How do Taxes Affect the Permanent Portfolio?

In my experience the PP is actually one of the more tax efficient portfolios out there. Gold has no dividends and cash has very low interest (these days). So only half of your portfolio is regularly throwing off taxable income, and because of the very different assets you usually have opportunities ...

It's all about what they agreed upon but she is in debt so maybe it's a red flag. Note that there's nothing agreed upon. Re: Very low yield bonds and the Permanent Portfolio

So, if I understand correctly, because of the higher convexity of bonds with very low coupon rates, they would still have plenty of “juice” to increase in price in response to a deflationary event? That’s fascinating. Do you think this would hold even in the case of negative yields? Theoretically, ...

Re: Very low yield bonds and the Permanent Portfolio

The thing about the Permanent Portfolio is that the long-term bonds do not really depend so much on bond interest as the income mechanism as much as the price movement on the bond itself. That runs counter to most traditional portfolio logic that uses bonds for fixed income, so the standard worry ab...

Re: Conspiracy theory you deem most likely to be true

Since it's a conspiracy theory thread, I find it plausible that Seth Rich was the DNC leaker. A staffer with clear motive and opportunity (a Bernie Bro working in IT for the party) getting murdered about the same time the info dropped on Wikileaks does raise eyebrows.
