Re: How to get High-Deductible health insurance?

Turns out the low-deductible plan at work is $193/mo. Even with a $550/mo subsidy. I'll likely keep it this year for a surgery. I'll then change it afterwards. Why are you in a rush to change it? Keep in mind that while your company subsidy is $550/month, the government subsidy you will receive on ...

No worries! I'm glad you found the setting. For the benefit of others who may have the same question -- the default setting is ex-US, but do you see that black box in the bottom right that says "xUS"? Click that, and select "ALL" from the dropdown. That will convert the World options to truly global...

Yep -- asset allocation is a lot more interesting than many people realize. Congrats on diving in! If you haven't already, check out my pet project Portfolio Charts . You should find both the Portfolios and Calculators sections particularly useful to explore how varying asset percentages affects por...

Re: Portfolio Charts

Yeah, cash is one of those things that I think people who grew up with today's very low rates really have no historical context for. I wouldn't count on exclusively using it for a 4% SWR today, but I also wouldn't assume it always returns next to nothing. It's a lot more dynamic than most people rea...

Re: The Extrovert Expense

Yeah, I personally think extroversion and expenses are on different vectors. Maybe they're not completely orthogonal, but you definitely can't directly correlate spending habits to personality. For every outgoing person spending a lot of money on a social scene there's a gregarious beach bum spendin...

(I am a buy and hold and hold and hold. It is hard for me to cut my losses.) Re: Rapidly Changing Automotive Technology

There was a study done a while back on the net effect of back braces on injury occurrence in a warehouse setting. Braces are designed as safety devices to prevent back injury while lifting and are proven to help, so they should definitely reduce injury, right? Well, it's not that simple. The moment ...

Re: Advice for a cover letter in consulting

I've worked for several "outsourced innovation" consultancies. It's a good gig if you can get it. The goal of a cover letter is to give someone just enough of a hook to pay attention to your resume. My initial reaction is that there's too much back story (save that for the interview where you can of...

I'm also very prone to depression, which I think can also be related to my low hormonal levels (there are proven correlations between low test and depression). So that is also a big reason I'm thinking about therapy. Low sex drive and prone to depression? Be careful not to self-diagnose a testoster...

Re: The fly in the ointment of ERE is women

I'd also point out that it's important to think of the big picture. If you only think of dating as an extra expense to your current personal single-life system, then yes it may be a net negative to your financial ERE process. But IMHO that's a very narrow-minded approach. If you think of a relations...

Correlation vs. causation. The fly in the ointment of otherwise happy relationships is mismatched expectations. Find someone who shares your values, and life is a lot easier.

Re: Outreach attempt

The trick with effective outreach is to realize that it involves more than one step.

1) Make others aware of the opportunity
2) Motivate them to desire it
3) Help them feel empowered to accomplish it

Providing information is the easy part. Motivation and empowerment require a bit of finesse.

Lately, like since the election, I have noticed serious radicalization on both wings of the political spectrum, and this has been... alarming. So I have gone back to a hobby of mine, trying to figure out how we started a civil war 157 years ago. It seems irrelevant, but in a world where quilters ca...

Re: I'm starting to hate my 9-5?

IMHO, constantly writing a movie in your head where you're a slave to the wealthy without appreciating just how good you have it is going to make you miserable. Try taking a break from that and focusing on the opportunities in front of you and the good things you can do with them. You have so much t...

Yes, this is an issue. But in my experience the root cause very often misdiagnosed by the retiree. The conflict is most easily caused a lack of emotional intelligence on the part of the retiree combined with understandable enthusiasm to share an exciting accomplishment. The dry spells are really tough on him precisely because he's smart enough to remained disciplined. Feeling forced to trade in a poor m...
