Re: Portfolio Charts

FYI -- I just updated all of the calculators on the site with a fancy new interface and the ability to easily translate portfolio ideas between countries. I know there are a good number of international investors here on the forum, so feel free to let me know if there's something I can change or add...

Re: Noob Investor Asks Noob Questions for the 10,000th time

MMM convinced me that buy and hold was the way to go so I have everything from previous years invested in a Vanguard U.S. total stock market fund and total bond market fund... but after reading a Jim Collins article about how the stock market "always goes up" I started to worry about this strategy....

Re: FIRE Projections Question

FYI -- just because you have money in a tax-deferred account does not mean you are prevented from accessing it before normal retirement age. Google "Roth conversion ladder". But to the spirit of your question, try playing with this withdrawal rates calculator: https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolio/w...

Re: New NYT Editor, a bit bigoted?

I'm no fan of the modern trend of social media lynch mobs enforcing punishment by popular vote, but personally I have no problem with people being called out for clearly racist comments or with prominent organizations being called out for knowingly promoting these same people to leadership positions...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Any thoughts on why rising interest rates are driving gold prices down ? If there's one thing I've learned from in investing in the PP/GB over the years, it's that watching each of the very different assets gives you a unique insight into just how poor the experts are at predicting or explaining ma...

Re: Barbell Investing Strategy?

I've seen the term "barbell" refer to two different ideas in investing. The first is in reference to investing in equal parts short and long term bonds where you're buying the barbell along the maturity curve. Your question implies the second, which is more about taking risks with a small amount of ...

Re: Ecuador Will Imminently Withdraw Asylum For Julian Assange

This could be the real throw down between Trump and Mueller ... it is rumored that Mueller has offered Assange immunity if he has the goods on Trump and/or Russia. If true, Pompeo's head will explode and it will become clear why Pompeo is Trump's main squeeze these days. Unless Assange has been blo...

Ah -- good point. There's hope for the experts after all! Assuming they don't think they're frauds, of course. :)

Empirical Evidence of Mt. Stupid

I found this article and associated study co-written by David Dunning (of Dunning-Kruger fame) interesting: Research: Learning a Little About Something Makes Us Overconfident It's a nice primer on how overconfidence works in beginners and experienced people alike, and it covers examples in several d...

Re: Portfolio Charts

You're welcome! Personally, I always liked bonds even with their historically low rates as an accumulator. The low uncertainty of the resulting diversified portfolio as a whole made it a lot easier to project my FIRE date without stressing about sequence of returns, and it helped me focus my energy ...

Re: Portfolio Charts

Do index funds for commodities exist? Absolutely. For reference, the commodities data on the site tracks the S&P GSCI index. Commodities index funds are more scarce than for other assets, but one example is GSG. If bonds are paying 2% there’s not much room for upside and lots of room for downside. ...

Re: Free Speech: Thank You Jacob

The common theme that makes my handful of favorite forums so appealing is a sense of mutual respect. Disagreement is just fine, but the willingness to debate in good faith and ultimately let some differences go in the name of a more important common interest is what defines a healthy social group. T...

Re: Portfolio Charts

I'm not sure how all your data plays out on the inside, but I would imagine if you are already calculating annual portfolio values and annual CAGR, it wouldn't be too difficult to add some ifs? Then again I'm no programmer! The way the spreadsheets are structured, it will take a bit of effort to en...

Re: Portfolio Charts

Any critical comments to the above mentioned allocation are most welcome. Lots of good questions. I'm not sure I have all the answers, but here's a first pass: Bonds: generally speaking, if you're looking for long-term bonds you can use the longest-term available in your country. If you want to mod...

Re: IPIP NEO, ERE/FIRE vs conscientiousness

I imagine there might be some behavioral natural selection involved as well. Reckless (non-cautious) adventurers only have to jump out of an airplane once without checking the parachute to be cured of that particular personality pairing. ;)

Re: IPIP NEO, ERE/FIRE vs conscientiousness

I took the short test. I admit I struggle with personality tests because I find that my response may be very different at work or in my personal life, although reading this I think that may simply be a factor of my very high agreeableness. Basically, I'm comfortable setting my own feelings aside (of...

New Views So the bad news is that my previously described elderly cat situation worked itself out naturally. There was no way around the temporary sadness, but 16 years is a very good run and it was her time. But the good news is that with that burden lifted, our self-imposed hiatus on revisiting o...

Re: Please help me ensure I'm thinking about this properly

Assuming the settlement payout is all at once (and not scheduled out over time), then your #4 assumption sounds right. BRK taxes are a little simpler than other investing options because it does not pay a dividend. Regarding #2: When you sign up for Obamacare and claim a subsidy ahead of time, the I...

@jacob — You should really consider becoming a “personality consultant” if there is such a thing. Your knowledge on this topic is truly impressive. And thanks for the links. I know I’ve been skeptical about over-dependence on Myers-Briggs in the past, but the functional stack descriptions really do ...
