Re: RIP RBG

Thanks for the thoughtful posts, IlliniDave. When most of the internet going predictably hyperbolic and ramping up the propaganda machine, reading a measured take is a welcome reprieve. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall during all of the backroom negotiations that are just now getting ...

Re: classical_Liberal's Semi-ERE

I like how there's an ongoing thread debating ERE status symbols, and CL just casually drops the biggest one in his journal.

Boss: "I'm in control and you have no say."
CL: "That's not how this works. I quit."

So metal. Congrats!

Re: Avoidant personality disorder

I re-retired in July, but Covid has effectively shut down any social plans I'd normally be looking at. It's tough, but I'm doing the best I can and looking forward to when things loosen up a bit.

i suspect a lot of people who pursue ERE are trying to avoid the social aspect of work.
I'm the opposite. I enjoy being around people, but have a very low tolerance for responsibilities that I don't enjoy. So I'm perfectly happy to avoid paid work but show up at happy hour.

Re: What's the highest flight of stairs you will climb?

Since climbing the full set of stairs in my 30-story building (with pushup sets every 2 floors) is my favorite workout routine, maybe I'm not the right guy to ask. ;) I live in the bottom half, so even in non-workout scenarios I pretty much always take the stairs these days unless I'm carrying groce...

Re: What would you do to become "rich"?

Getting $10mm really isn't my thing, even if I bet I could have reached it had I made it a priority. But I learned along the way that the sacrifices required to do it (relationships, health, sanity, etc) just aren't worth it, and that I can live an objectively great life with way less. But if you're...

I've never met Frank in person, but even to me he's a legend. I'm really sorry to hear he's gone, but congrats on having such a great companion.

I have a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3s which are amazing with great noise cancelling that I don't plan to give up.
+1. I splurged on a pair last year (when they were discounted before Christmas) and don't regret it one bit. It's a terrific product.

Re: Portfolio Charts

It's true that the site is structured around the idea of self-exploration. I've watched how people interpret the content over the years and honed things a bit to address common questions or misconceptions (FAQs, front-page key concepts, anticipating critiques, etc), but there's always room for impro...

I hear ya. Without devolving the journal into a technical discussion, I'll just point out that I specifically address this critique here: https://portfoliocharts.com/2019/07/23/how-to-study-portfolios-when-the-data-is-full-of-bubbles/ And while I absolutely appreciate the detailed site feedback, if ...

Re: Tyler9000's Journal

@CL -- Yeah, that does start to get complicated but I'm not opposed to the idea of making a few more standalone tools (sorta like the Portfolio Finder). The trick is figuring out how to design the inputs so that they're flexible enough to be useful and cover all of the important variables but simple...

Re: Assessing Federal agents deployed to Portland

23 days they've been deployed to Portland to "protect Federal property". The most impressive feat so far is that Mayor Wheeler was tear gassed by the Feds last night while walking towards the Mark O. Hatfield courthouse after stepping off the podium from which he had addressed the protesters. For t...

Re: Why is Patreon income taxed by the USA?

Generally speaking, money one makes from Patreon has always been considered taxable income and creators are responsible for reporting it on their tax returns. There's hustle involved, so the IRS isn't likely to consider it a gift. You can probably think of it more like tips or hobby income. Where it...

Remember when the Lancet published the completely fraudulent study that claimed hydroxychloroquine was ineffective at treating COVID-19? Re: COVID-19

if covid does all this, goes endemic, and we don't develop any meaningful immunity (as was suggested in a couple of news articles i read today so, disclaimer), it will meaningfully shorten life expectancy.
