Re: Sedentary indoor cold wear

You can verify the zero point of the thermometer by dumping it in into ice water (water with ice in it will be at 0C/32F). Tap water should be fine. Would suggest sealing the thermometer in a clear water proof bag (ziploc) if it can't handle being immersed.

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE

Reading the above, I had the thought, people shouldn't hesitate to start threads about what is currently important to them even if it seems that it's not something the "core" group is into. I don't mean it in a "well if you don't like what the ere2 color people are talking about why ...

Re: Future of Artificial Intelligence

Years ago we were interviewed by a handful of print journalists who recorder the interviews then went away and wrote their stories. Every one of the stories had factual errors at least as consequential as these. If I wrote openai queries about myself, those factual errors would likely be present in...

Re: Future of Artificial Intelligence

I rank both answers around 900-1100 on the milliredditor scale. I mean, I've seen worse from actual humans who graduated from facebook university. The "TL;DR-have opinion anyway" potential is immense. My main concern at this level would be its potential use for misinformation, especially i...

- no Visual Studio, so can't program in C/C++ as effectively as on Windows For my quant job, I had to use visual studio. I never learned how to set up a new project and clicking on all the right context menus in the right order. I had to ask a friendly engineer to come over and handle it for me eve...

Re: Linux - Getting started

I think there's some grass is greener effect going on. I've been using *nix since 1994. ERE HQ runs on Ubuntu20.04LTS with the third major upgrade since starting with 14LTS seven years ago. Software updates usually take a few minutes. IIRC, the update process has broken itself once; the upgrade proc...

Re: Ben2000s journal

I wish I did this earlier, but too many simultaneous habit changes are overwhelming. I also stopped buying packaged food because of the environmental impact. I will save money on trash bags because the majority of my garbage is from food packaging. But also effective? Early inspiration for me came ...

Re: Any Data Analysts?

Have been chatting with team members today about version control, they generally seem not to know what a git repository is, some of them have PhDs from fancy schools. Ha! That'd be me. (I do know what github is, but I've never used it. I did use another form of version control.) But overall, yes, t...

Re: WL 5 > 6 MMMG

However, cooking so you have leftovers that you can make into multiple different dishes is currently beyond my skill level, so even if I can see the potential flow, in practice, I probably need to increase my cooking skill level first before I have a yield of leftovers that can flow into other dish...

Re: ERE bots or no?

There should be a clear rollback procedure for the bot's activity. (This may be as simple as being able to delete the bot user the same way other users have been deleted in the past.) Even manually rolling back is difficult. Hard copy still exists on the wayback machine. Holes appear in conversatio...

ARGH. There's a 255 character limit on email signatures.

I'll put it version 6 up as a global sticky announcement instead.

I edited this somewhat heavily. It could still need some clean up. This is probably as pretty as I can make it.

Lets not lower the barrier so much that we start attracting the "too long, didn't read, have opinion anyway"-demographics.

It seems as though the big push then is in doing more and different things; "adding different boxes".
Effectively, it means giving up watching TV/youtube.

Another day, another post on Hacker News about disullusionment with modern data analyst (aka "data scientist") career: https://ryxcommar.com/2022/11/27/goodbye-data-science/ The guy switched to software engineering (into the "data engineering" subspecialty) and finds it way bett...
