Re: Moderation: Overlap between money and politics

Since the last crisis (final straw) I want and do spend much less time on the forum than I used to. Whereas I would previously adopt a wait and see attitude or moderate with a scalpel or try to steer errant threads back on track, I now use the much cruder technique of simply banishing threads to pol...

It is.

Re: Garden Log

But when I received it, it stated two things: number one is what not to be sold in California (uh-oh), number two--it was not to be used for drinking water because it has lead?! It's good ole' Prop65. It's basically a sticker that is slapped onto everything that contains a chemical or mineral that ...

Re: What's a good digital watch? (specifically for sailing)

The strap is small for me, I use the very last hole in the strap. The security loop does not work, but maybe I will stretch it so it slides over the buckle and the strap. The distance between the buckle and the last hole on the NATO strap I bought is 7.5". I forgot how much I cut the strap dow...

Also (I might have missed it): "If item X is so necessary/desirably how come I've been able to live without it for N years so far?" May or may not be rhetorical. For example, it's getting increasingly annoying to live w/o a smartphone although it was no problem for the first N-5 years of o...

Bridges are rather hardcore for someone starting out with planks and wall push-ups. Start with supermans. These can even be done one leg/arm at a time.

Re: Systems!- Level 6 towards 7

https://www.amazon.com/Chessboard-Web-Strategies-Connection-Networked/dp/0300215649/ seems like it might be useful for the WL6->7 transition. Networks are a fundamental part of systems thinking so a deeper understanding would facilitate getting out of the "chessboard"-mentality that charac...

Re: Green Tech Future Revival?

@7wb5 - Ah okay. In that sense, nothing new. Just a regular booster shot of hopium into a market-based democracy. It serves the purpose of inspiring the ground forces (activists, consumers, green voters, ...) which may sway enough votes/economic decisions to bring the system to the place where the a...

Re: Green Tech Future Revival?

Try to stare at this for a year: http://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/ (I'm serious. I've done so. It's worthwhile.) Notice which dials change daily and seasonally and how much power generation they currently represent. Do any of them move opposite to each other? I think following this dashboard for a...

Re: Green Tech Future Revival?

If the argument is based on simple cost parity, I wouldn't be so sure---actually I'm pretty sure it will be wrong. Cost parity is based on alternatives being able to piggy back on the supply-at-will and storage solutions of the gas-based generators. These are pretty expensive externalities that alte...

Re: Green Tech Future Revival?

Land area is not the limiting factor (red herring) and extrapolating early-stage exponential returns w/o considering the production scaling problem and grid interconnect/base-load/storage issues is rather simplistic. Hopefully the actual report, which I didn't read, takes those issues into account a...

Re: What's a good digital watch? (specifically for sailing)

It's really hard to choose, but if I had to pick one (as per the podcast that's obviously not what I did), I'd go with the F91W. The strap sucks for me. This is possibly because my (12yo girl-sized/ectomorph) wrist is just so that it's either too tight or so loose that it wants to rotate around. Th...

Re: Bitcoin on the rise

Stability is relative. The financial system continuously adjusts. All numbers can be changed. For example, the 37% is much higher than it is for equity (more like 3-5%). The CME would offer some legalese docs. Cascading counterparty risk is always a possibility, last seen in 2009. At this point &quo...

Re: Bitcoin on the rise

How could a corporation hedge Bitcoin even if they wanted to? If Bitcoin collapses, the contra party risk in any hedge would be huge (I think) Bitcoin futures already trade on the CME, so they could/would be hedged the same way that farmers, oil companies, etc. hedge their production. Selling a fut...

Re: Bitcoin on the rise

One wonders whether the increasing acceptance of bitcoin by forward thinking corporations is a) getting ahead of the curve and installing a new twin-currency payment system, like e.g. quoting prices in both "gold" and "dollars. b) a way to monetize bitcoin "lottery winners" ...

Re: Learn to be easy to live with?

It'd be a very interesting exercise to make a Wheaton table of social skills, but I feel like it wasn't very long ago that I escaped the primordial ooze in that regard. I can't find one with the search function, but maybe someone has drawn up something similar. Someone indeed has: https://www.amazo...

Re: Book recommendations on peak oil?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BT3H56S/ They're both relevant. However, the shale revolution means that there's now enough fossil reserves available for the high-emissions climate change pathways. Thus oil is not limited by nature but which emissions-path "we" choose to commit to, that is, p...

Re: Which covid vaccine would you pick?

I'd pick Pfizer. The common side-effects is your immune system responding to get rid of the intruder---you're experiencing these signals to get you to lie down and take it easy---if you experience them you know that the body knows the spike protein. These last 2-3 days which is about how long it tak...
