Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

Insofar the purpose of humanity is "higher ego development"---involuting the universe, if you will---is whether your purpose/what you're doing (and thus the purpose of humanity or the universe writ large) inspires the next lower level. IOW, if you're self-actualizing, are you inspiring the...

Re: Bicycle7's Journal

I originally installed something like these tires on my never-went-anywhere-(yet?) touring bike build. https://www.continental-tires.com/products/b2c/bicycle/tires/ruban-shieldwall/? The idea is that on asphalt, the only part of the tire touching the ground is the smooth middle, while on soft ground...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

The scarcest resource is never money. It's always creativity. No, for most creative people, it really is money. This is why artists, scientists, or anyone whose contributions can't easily be commercialized tend to end up "serving fries with that" or spend much of their lifetime trying to ...

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

I'd suggest going to page 51 of the Cook Greuter link (pdf page #53), the page with the arch diagram. Note the pre-conventional ("Don't tell me what to do, I do what I want") and the conventional ("I do what I'm told to do") are described as the "self" being "socia...

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

It's worth having at least some understanding of ego development theory. I did not learn about EDT until AFTER constructing the WL table. In that regard, it's remarkable yet not surprising that the WL table lines up with the various EDTs that have been proposed. They also more or less line up with o...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

—Random ERE thought of the day: To go from a high COL to a low COL, ~20k, you have to think about money a lot more than normies do. To go from a low cost of living to a very low cost of living, ~10k, you have to think about money a lot less than normies do. You have to think about other things. The...

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

V interesting. The part that's curious to me is that wl7-8 is where jacob sees the inner work begin. To me, the inner work is the work. It's only after the inner work is done that it unspools out into "reality." And without the inner work, no action taken in reality will be persistent or ...

Re: ERE as a couple: getting things or services?

How do you communicate about getting things or services as a couple? I think this is a very good question. How do couples resolve @#$@#$-issues? This were the WL table can be most helpful! Not as a normative solution telling you how you must do it. But as a tool that makes it easier to understand a...

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

How does this differ from the Values Clarification piece ... The point of WL6-8 is that it doesn't differ. YMOYL very much starts with values but the book itself never makes it into systems theory (even though VR herself understands systems theory). OTOH, WL6-8 actually does have a realistic unders...

I would also suggest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNZmJpQcmO4 (4 minutes)

Worthwhile as a summary for ERE and also touching on some WL8 aspects near the end.

Re: How awesome is slow cooking?

Unfortunately early British colonists did not stay in their lane/latitude: Me neither. I say good riddance to soups and stews! I fucking hate soup or any stew I can't eat with a fork! One of the wonderful things about globalism is how cooking cultures intermixed and created new dishes(*). I'm...

Re: Actualization!- Level 7 towards level 8

The first thing to understand with this thread is that as far as the ERE forum is considered, WL8 is heading into thin air. Unlike previous WLs, we don't have enough forum threads to generalize and turn it into proper statitics. Here be dragons! In many ways, the current (2024) misunderstandings/wor...

Good initiative. I made the other threads "sticky", which means they appear at the top of the given index. Lets see what we can fill in together here.

Presumably you would need to keep it at a minimum temperature to avoid bacteria building up.
60-70C is about all that's needed to do that. Bacteria don't thrive in that heat. Same reason why water heaters are set to that temperature.

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale

To reiterate, apart from spreading the word, I think there's still theoretical work to be done. I really think we need someone credible (a credentialled economist) to tell politicians that mass FIRE will not be the end of the world. Keynes with his offhand musing on 15 hour work week was a good sta...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

@J+G - Thank you. I didn't disagree with a single sentence there. Well put too. If I may put it in math terms. The human population exists on Bell curves (many variables, mostly all Gaussian). Within that population, samples exist on other Bell Curves (different averages and standard deviations). (F...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale

More broadly, I don't think it's possible to implement huge social change in purely bottom-up manner. What usually happens is that thinkers/activists/early adopters eventually get enough people behind an idea so that it becomes adopted by a major political player, and then implemented at country's ...

Re: The ERE Wheaton Scale

I don't follow. How did start from Keynes' letter and arrive at masses of people involved in active investing? Step 1. Collect underpants. Step 2. ???? Step 3. Profit! Seriously though. I think the internet has been and continue to be a significant force multiplier in spreading the ideas. While few...

Re: How awesome is slow cooking?

When did it become the norm in the developed world to cook in such energy intensive ways? I mean, there's nothing wrong with an occasional stir fry, sauté or baked meal for a treat. But every day seems excessive. Maybe the corporate wage-slave "pressure cooker" lifestyle encourages people...
