Re: ACA and living overseas

I've never heard of a "national" health insurance that worked outside the country of domicile, that is, on a global basis. That's why "travel insurance" exists. This is also why non-tourist visas/residence permits usually require proof of health insurance, which is almost always ...

Re: Didn't know I was part of a movement...

A movement is just a big enough mass of people changing their behavior and getting detected by the mainstream. It doesn't need to have a central organization or indeed any organization. A movement is but enough people following the same ideas and making roughly the same changes relative to the statu...

Re: A Jacob Mention

Why is that formula abandoned for endless discussions of Wheaten levels? I would rather watch S-class fix his vintage Mercedes a thousand times over one discussion over what a level 7 means. I don't think I am alone in this opinion. I would be very interested in the forums metrics since you have em...

Re: A Jacob Mention

My apologies to daylen*, but what value is communicating like this where 99 percent of people won't understand and the remaining 1 percent will find it off-putting to have to work so hard to understand when there are clear alternatives for communicating? Where is the value here? Where is the value ...

Re: A Jacob Mention

Interesting. I wonder if philosophy/embodiment is part of the problem. Those who read the book to learn the philosophy and then embodied it seem to enjoy more philosophizing. Those of us who were already doing it and discovered that Jacob's philosophizing fit with our experiences are less enthusias...

Re: A Jacob Mention

In science each advancement expands understanding (theory) by subsuming what was previously understood into a more comprehensive theory. For example, in dynamics General Relativity explains everything that Special Relativity does and then some. Likewise SR explains everything that Newton did and the...

Part of what may be seen as an insistence on treating topics within a framework is a defensive response to the rise of another movement of thought/commentary that tends to neglect frameworks altogether(*).

Re: AE's Journal Round 5 - Finding Freedom To

The volatile Texas electricity situation impact definitely depends on one's housing situation and general "awareness". Event casualties tend to make people from other states that are adapted to outlier weather events shake their head---it's hard to wrap one's head around what others take f...

Re: A Jacob Mention

"The more things change, the more they stay the same." Every 6-18 months the forum has a crisis. This wasn't the first time this happened---more like the 5th or 6th---and it won't be the last: Some thread turns into a major argument that is (usually indirectly) ultimately about uncompromis...

Re: A Jacob Mention

Anyways, I’m not even connecting the dots very well for myself, and I’m not trying to be contentious, but I am wondering about the infrastructure necessary to grow the level of thinkers who can do Level 7 ERE or permaculture. The best I can come up with would be some sort of semi-monastic practice ...

Re: A Jacob Mention

More global comment not to Alpha: I'm not so sure "ERE as a movement," ERE is going to change the world, Wheaton levels are a thing to ascend, you're doing it wrong if you want to stop at the MMM level, is the right way to go. Let people use the ERE ideas as a toolbox, dont make it a move...

Re: A Jacob Mention

ok--for me, as a member of the western tradition, philosophy and science begin with questions--the answers come only later. and when the answer chafes under further questioning then it's a sign that something needs rework--whether it's in the results or in the original research question. The reason...

Re: A Jacob Mention

We do not do it by asking questions. We do it by answering them.

I'm just slowly realizing that a forum is not the best format to do so.

It's anti-consumerist but not anti-capitalist. Capitalism need not necessarily be in the service of selling us stuff we don't know to impress people we don't care about. That's just how it ended up. I don't think you'll see me renouncing money or private ownership anytime soon.

WL1 is the scarcity mindset and also the most common one. Usually it's comments about how insane it is to eat lentil soup or turning down the thermostat voluntarily as this is associated with poverty. There are no financial concepts beyond "paying the bills", "lottery tickets", a...
