Re: Spend dividends or reinvest?
Yesterday, I learned a new word. An old world term for someone living off the income from their capital is called a rentier , which I knew, but apparently someone living by drawing down their capital is called a particulier . As far as dictionaries go, particulier is an archaic term for "privat...

Re: ERE math (chapter 7)
Obviously you can derive the amount of time worked for any number of accumulated expenses (1/withdrawal ratio) from the starting capital, interest rate and savings rate -- see below -- but that doesn't factor into account mortality and the desired ruin probability / probability of exhausting the st...

Since it wasn't mentioned, one starts sitting cross legged. Maybe that goes without saying? It's practically required to get a perfect score.mathiverse wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 11:42 amI heard about that too. This is related: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitting-rising_test

Re: reepicheep's journal
When you say hook an electric planer to a bike do you mean charge a battery with a bike and run the planer off the battery? Or remove the electric motor from the planer and connect a bike in its place? Either one seems challenging but I wonder if the bike directly running the planer could ever work...

I'm curious where you source your lumber? Do you ever take storm or windfall and process a whole tree or are you mostly buying? 95% of what I make is dimensioned SPH/HF construction grade lumber from either home depot or menards, because I'm cheap that way. I do spend some time at the store looking...

Re: Alternatives to classical logic
Anyone here has experience with alternatives to classical logic? How far do you wish to zoom out? Alternatives to classical or alternatives to logic? Alternatives to logic is establishing truth based on how it makes you feel, personal narrative (lived anecdotes), what a group reaches consensus on, ...

@ffj - Well, yes ... and at one point I actually contemplated writing a beginner's book... and an edited compendium of the blog posts has also been in the works. However, I learned that books alone don't provide an education. If it was that easy, we could get rid of all teachers and replace all scho...

This is why I was asking what geography or scale you are thinking about this from. The way I think about this depends on what scale or geography one is talking about. Solutions may be contextual as well. https://www.amazon.com/Integral-Ecology-Uniting-Multiple-Perspectives/dp/1590307674 has a good ...

*Which is why I am lately kind of in the mode of thinking that the audience of the "relatively poor" is where ERE ought to head next rather than trying to convince more of the affluent to give up their nice things/social status for free time, etc. What would it take to make your demonstra...

I wonder how industrial wood processing goes -- do they just remove a ton of material until they get something straightish, regardless of convex faces? Yes. This is the reason that dimensional lumber, e.g. a 2x4 is really 1.5x3.5 or a 1x4 is really 0.75x3.5, whereas if you buy roughsawn lumber (ava...

Re: Would 20M Radically Increase Your Happiness?
No, it wouldn't. I FIRE'd at 25x and I'm now at ~150x and very few things have changed. I still distinguish between price and value. A cup of coffee will never have a value of $50 no matter how much money I have. A car will never be worth more than $10000 . The only things forcing up my expenses are...

Another way of looking at it that @AE and I have discussed at some point during the dark-netting phase of our MMG is to think about it like writing fictional characters that interact with one another. Would it stand to reason/argument that this is not just fiction but actually how the mind gets con...

Very nice. I didn't realize it was this easy. Is there anything special about the salt being kosher or would any odd table salt do? If you can get it then "pickling salt" is preferred. Other types contain iodine et al. which can change the appearance over time. (That might be a US only pr...

Re: How do you make a house or apartment cozy?
Not an expert here, but our living room has actually been judged by a national mainstream audience and described as "cozy" by some. I think it's more of a "you know it when you see it" (note the many books that have been written about "hygge"), so the following rules ma...
