Also, if one plans on retiring early, they could max out traditional IRAs when working, then roll them over into Roths during the retired/low-income years, effectively paying zero taxes on them.

The austerity measures required are mostly in areas that are "non negotiable" - Social Security, Medicare, defense.
So no, I don't think they'll be more acceptable to the people.

@dragoncar: I doubt smelliness is correlated to gender. Body chemistry/diet seems more likely.

To save enough in five years, you need to save at least 75% of your paycheck. IIRC 50% will get you there in 20.
