Re: What I Spend

I've been reflecting on the gym and politics thing. It seems small, but this is a repeated pattern for me. I am drawn to min / maxing. Get as much money as possible. Spend as little as possible. Get as strong as possible. How can I try even harder? Who is the best fighter? What's an even more exciti...

Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI

The author points out that games are most often played by those with ulterior motives who lack some level of "mature development". Those who will get the greatest insights from the book are also those who likely frequent social circles in which games are relatively rare and who would make...

Re: Movement

IMO skip the theatrics of the five fingers I tried and returned a range of low rise / wide toe box athletic shoes. A couple versions the reebok nano, a few pairs of inov-8's, the new balance TRNR, and a pair of Altra's. I spent hours searching for the widest athletic shoes before settling on those....

Re: Movement

My library had a couple of Katy Bowman's audio books: 1. Move your DNA - I enjoyed this. It opened my eyes to the difference between my prior experience (movement as exercise) and the reason I think this thread was started (movement as a lifestyle). I like her conception of movement as a nutrient. W...

Re: What I Spend

You are right on the premium - both import and "luxury" pricing. My state also outlawed shipping of whisky to residential addresses - blocking online price competition and ensuring I pay a local tax around 11%. Typical out the door prices would be: Old Pulteney 12yr - $50 Balvenie 14yr - $...

Re: Stop 401k to pay off mortgage?

I don't think you're wrong. Mostly surprised at my response and the clean slotting into the my middle class upbringing. This is an example of the using money to make money I am thinking of. A twitch streamer buys a gas station, using leverage, accelerated depreciation and tax savings to come out ahe...

Re: What I Spend

Kaiser is a unique organization. Faced with that bill, being on the hook for $1k must have been a huge relief. It emphasizes the need for a personal healthcare strategy. Part of what I hope to gain with an HMO in 2022, is skill working the system. Should I later have a serious medical need, I'd like...

Re: Healthy Habits Journal

Alcohol disrupts my sleep, even 1 drink. Because of that, I try to drink early and avoid consecutive days of consumption.

I wonder if you'll see sleep improvements while abstaining. From what I understand, that experience is very individual.

Re: Stop 401k to pay off mortgage?

Funny - on the class side of things - my parents paid their mortgage around 50. My mom framed the letter, with a floor plan of her house. It was a big deal. No question that influenced my choice to do the same. My initial response to "middle class investments designed to help retirees stay midd...

@cL - I lean that way towards healthcare but have also neglected preventative care. My intent is to reverse course in 2022. I'd like to get a testosterone baseline, look at a shoulder issue / elbow pain / developing bunions, maybe explore my self-diagnosed autism with a therapist, and look more seri...

Re: Dharma and non duality

@Scott -- Did the physical practice really help? When I did endurance work, I found it let my mind wander. It felt great, but I tended to disassociate from the experience. I found my yoga practice different, in that it takes me to a single pointed focus, quieting everything else in the mind. Once t...

Re: Dharma and non duality

I'd be interested in discussion of how the study of Tantra / dharma / non-duality changed your practice or experience spirituality. I came at non-dual Tantra in a backwards fashion. Started yoga because stretching, with zero spiritual intent or experience. Practice changed me anyway - less rigid, mo...

Re: Is Software Development/ Programming Oversaturated?

The status thing took me by surprise. I have always been one to downplay success at work, avoiding related conversation whenever possible. Once it was gone, finding myself feeling "less than" was very off putting. It must have been motivating my drive for continuing education. I am sure ke...

Re: Stop 401k to pay off mortgage?

You want to pay off your mortgage. The peace of mind gives you mental freedom, and could change the way you live as a result. So do it. Life doesn't have to be mathematically optimal. It's not like you'd be blowing the money on beanie babies or collectible whisky. Outside of money nerds on the inter...

Re: Is Software Development/ Programming Oversaturated?

In the 20 years I worked in software development (1993-2013) Have you kept up on progress in the field, since then? Since leaving work in February, I had been paying attention - watching new developments, picking up a trick here or there. Last month, I turned off my LinkedIn. It seemed to flip a sw...

Re: Group Fitness Instructor

If you just want to try getting in front of a group to teach, you may be able to find a gym with a much lower barrier to entry. LA Fitness is 1 day and $100: https://www.lafitness.com/pages/AerobicsCertification.aspx You'd be treated accordingly, but it's a foot in the door. Ego's suggestion looks m...

Re: Hussman shows a risk of 50-66% [US stock]market losses

In practice, I agree with @steveo73 - I personally chose a relatively simple passive investing strategy. I think it suits most, especially those unwilling to do the work or educate themselves. But, I did find it helpful to understand why I was choosing it, and what I was leaving on the table by doin...

Games People Play - The core content was written in the mid-60's, lightly revised in the mid-90's. It's an interesting read, but as much for recognizing social progress since then, as understanding the author's transactional analysis framework.

Re: An American Millennial

Housing - In the percentage, I would include "extra" factors like property taxes, around 1% of home value in maintenance costs, and insurance. For us, the home we were willing to buy was substantially nicer than the apartment we were willing to rent. The "extra" factors were comp...
