Re: Using Stock Broker Margin to Buy Real Estate
You can get more leverage at IB if you have portfolio margin instead of RegT margining.

Only 4 years old? I'd check to see if it was still under warranty.

Re: Warning: WH seeks to limit/deport immigrants using ACA and other gov. services
Here's something that's REAL. My brother-in-law has been living in the United States for more than 25 years and is on TPS status. He did not get married, so he has had no path to citizenship. Now that TPS has been officially cancelled, he is going to be forced to leave the place where he has lived, ...

Re: Warning: WH seeks to limit/deport immigrants using ACA and other gov. services
This infuriates me. I am in a situation where my family could be potentially impacted if this rule if it is put into effect. Over the past 15 years I’ve paid nearly 250K in federal income taxes alone. I will be absolutely livid if they tell me that my spouse can no longer be a citizen and can be dep...

Re: How Will My Fascination with ERE Affect My Marriage?
Maybe you just need to put those feminine wiles to use. Like set up a date night where you cook him a home made meal made from scratch, show yourself off in a dress you made by hand, prop him up be letting him beat you in a game of chess, and then when you are relaxing in your newly decluttered liv...

Re: Baking Soda Toothpaste Alternatives
I have allergies and/or sensitivities to the ingredients in Crest, Aim, etc. Baking soda has been great for me over the past couple years. However, it is starting to become an irritant (I think) to my cheek tissue and I want to try something else. I have bad sensitivities to some toothpaste brands ...

Not really an “ERE compliant purchase”, but I recently bought the Bose quiet comfort 35 noise cancelling Bluetooth headphones, and they are wonderful. Expensive, but wonderful.

Re: Will Applying for a Mortgage Cause Problems?
They'll do a "hard pull" credit inquiry which will show up on your credit reports that you have applied for credit. This has a very minor negative impact on your credit score for a short period of time (6 months to 2 years or so) I believe.

Re: Tying your health insurance to your job seems really stupid?
It's not the only stupid thing... Having a "cost-sharing" structure (e.g. deductibles and oopmax) that have a one-year-clock that resets every year is insane. Encourages you to try to plan your medical care around the benefit-year instead of what is best for your health. It also encourages...

Re: First paycheck - You won't BELIEVE the taxes! Tax optimization?
I'd love to have such a low taxes in Europe. I'd love to have the social services and public health care options that are available in Europe ;) Really though, the taxes I cited were only for state/local (and only a subset of them.) At the federal level, the tax rate is progressive, but for me tops...

Re: First paycheck - You won't BELIEVE the taxes! Tax optimization?
New York has high state taxes, so yea I'd believe it. Illinois is catching up, though, they just bumped up their tax rate from 3% to 4.95% and it still doesn't solve anything . So I'm now $110 poorer each month. If we were smart, once I start my new job we'd move to SD, but alas we are locked to ou...

Re: ERE w/ condo
Let me add a data-point: I live in a condo in Chicago. - Last year, my property taxes increased 60% over the prior year, with rumors that this year will have another large increase on top of that. - Also last year, I had my normal HOA dues increase, AND a special assessment of about $5000. - Further...

Re: SWR milestone record
My trailing-12-month spending rate divided by current net worth is: 4.44% Not 100% sure what my ongoing WR would be after retiring due to two factors: - In the last year I had quite a few of the "large but infrequent" expenses all hit in the same year, and - Uncertainty over what my health...

Re: Calculate depreciation for all your items
Yeah, I don't consider personal items toward my net worth. It would be more trouble/effort to try to sell the stuff than my time is worth, so I assume the net liquidating value of it is $0.

Re: How to prepare for the next recession?
I made it through 2008-2010 unscathed and employed at the same company throughout. It was quite a boon to my net worth to be able to continue to throw a lot of my income into the stock market at those levels. I feel that I am pretty much at the twilight of my working career, but I have a big case of...
