Re: Experimenting with Multigrain Porridge

Multigrain porridge seems like a good ERE breakfast option. My understanding is that this was a staple of the pre-industrial British peasants' diet.

Bob's Red Mill has similar products that might be available locally if you want to try a smaller amount.

Great read.
+1

In particular, it is heartwarming to know that, 10 years in, there are no significant regrets.

Re: Programming is the best way to ERE

IMO programming is a good path to ERE but not the path. OP is right that it is remunerative and can be self-taught. But it seems like only a small percentage of the population has the aptitude to become a competent programmer, and only a fraction of those are capable of learning on their own outside...

Re: Rice flakes as an alternative to Rolled oats

I've heard of poha and want to try it, but haven't found it locally in USA yet. Rice flakes are probably marginally cheaper, greener, and faster-cooking than oats. The downside is that rice is almost entirely carbohydrate so you might need to add a protein or fat source to have a satiating breakfast...

Re: Grocery Bill: The Most Difficult Thing to Give Up.

See this wiki article for the strategic framework: https://wiki.earlyretirementextreme.com/wiki/Pantry-keeping_with_staples_and_sales The center of your diet, accounting for most of the calories, volume, and spending, should be bulk stable commodities: tap water, dry rice, dry pulses (beans/lentils)...

Re: What is your favorite legume?

Dry split peas, I love a rich split pea and coconut milk soup.

Dry garbanzo beans / chickpeas are the runner up. There are so many tasty ways to prepare them, chana masala, hummus, and in salads.

Re: VBTIX vs Vanguard Target Retirement Income Trust vs “Stable Value Guaranteed Interest Account”

Since we are only talking a few weeks and if you don't want to take any risk of any kind, then I would suggest putting it into Vanguard Prime Money Market Fund. The 7-day SEC yield is 2.45%. +1 If you are just parking the assets for a couple weeks, I'd use a money market fund or short term treasury...

Re: Alternatives to Google News?

I just use Feedly to read an RSS feed from one major reputable news source. For a while it was Reuters but I couldn't keep up with the pace of the articles. Now I'm on ABC News. I own a little DIS so figured I should read "my" own product. Reuters is better-written (higher grade level) but...

Re: Best Gold or Silver ETFs?

Yes, the expense ratio of GLDM and that new AAAU are tied at 0.18%, so I'm not sure which to favor. There's probably a tiebreaking factor buried in their prospectuses somewhere, but I haven't dug in yet.

Re: Cheap restaurants in Las Vegas

The core strip is an oligopoly so you won't find any bargains there. Look for restaurants catering more to locals than tourists. +1 to Lotus of Siam many options in Chinatown and the old downtown Peppermill is not too bad considering the portion sizes I've had recommendations for Viva Las Arepas, Ta...

Re: Best Gold or Silver ETFs?

I focus on expense ratios. IAU was the lowest for a long time at .25%, but the new GLDM is slightly lower at 0.18%.

If this is part of a permanent portfolio, you should hold only gold, no silver. Gold is predominantly a monetary metal while silver is predominantly an industrial commodity.

Re: Learning auto maintenance and repair

I've been thinking that the V6 Chrysler 300 might be a new DIY champ. Longitudinal RWD layout, large engine bay, and generally brutalist engineering makes for easy repairs. The late 3.5, and 3.6, are both pretty solid with wide cheap parts availability. The Chrysler and Mercedes transmissions are so...

Re: Vegan Food Rotation

My routine is to keep many staples stocked (as described at https://wiki.earlyretirementextreme.com/wiki/Pantry-keeping_with_staples_and_sales), and make a meal plan and shopping run every 2 weeks. Each 2-week plan includes (2) breakfast batch recipes that cover 5 weekdays each, (2) lunch batch reci...

Re: Dividend Index Funds or Dividend Stocks?

You could also look at low-expense actively managed equity income funds such as VEIRX https://investor.vanguard.com/mutual-funds/profile/overview/veirx . The distributions seem to be more consistent than ETFs', and expenses are only negligibly higher. In general I prefer indexes due to manager risk,...

Re: Set it and Forget it fund.

It's hard to answer without any information about your investing goals or risk tolerance. As others said, for true set-and-forget you need an all-in-one fund, not one that's intended to be a component of multi-fund portfolio. Target Retirement Income is a good low-volatility total-return index portf...

Re: Vegetarian Lunch Ideas for Work

A "buddha bowl" is basically a stack of random plant foods that together look good and have interesting textures. You can google for many ideas. My reliable vegetarian lunches are - split pea stew (split peas, stock, carrots, onions, optional tofu/tempeh) - chana masala with rice (garbanzo...

Re: Maths question

Because if you increment a rational number digit, you create a duplicate number that appears somewhere else in the sequence, which was already accounted for. But when you increment a real number digit, you create a distinct number that wasn't already accounted for. Another way of saying it is that t...
