Re: Ebola and fragility
I get the checklist argument for standard medical issues, but this isn't a standard medical issue. This is a known disease with a 60-80% mortality rate in Africa that threatens to become a full blown worldwide epidemic. The woman: * is a nurse who recently worked with ebola patients * goes to her do...

Toilet tank is good for a few gallons, too. Also, make sure any hand sanitizer you buy and use is 70% alcohol or higher. Most commercial brands are 63%. Have a well-stocked first aid kit, because we still have injuries and falls and whatnot at home, even in self-imposed quarantine. Anything that hel...

Re: Authors Guild/Hachette/Amazon
I self-publish for a living (and make a very healthy living at it, in the romance genre) and I lean more toward the opinion that Amazon is trying to keep prices at $9.99 or below because they use eBooks as loss leaders. If eBooks were more profitable then Apple iBooks and Google Play might become mo...

I think the issue is the rate of change. My family has experienced an extraordinary 18 months or so as our income has gone from perfectly abundant to overwhelmingly huge when some writing I do took off (royalty based, so I make money per sale). The stress from the massive spike and the economic/soci...

Re: Grocery stores where I can buy 10 lb bags of food?
I used to live in Amherst. Deals & Steals in NoHo has a "scratch 'n dent," expired foods section with perfectly fine food for dirt cheap. Take the bus over there (or bike the path). It's right across from Iron Horse. Look for the SALE rack. Their prices are good for organic but the rec...

SW, I had a job with loads if free time, but not the kind of surveillance you're describing! If writing to eventually publish (i.e. fiction, nonfiction books) is a goal, consider some kind of device that (nearly) seamlessly fits in, like a NEO Alphasmart. http://www.ebay.com/itm/AlphaSmart-NEO-Porta...

I live about an hour and a half-2 hours from that Maine practice. We're about to go for high deductible health insurance. Thank you for posting that!

Re: What drives the desire to travel?
For me, in my early 40s, the desire to travel hasn't diminished. The reality of three kids, one quite small and with special needs, definitely makes international travel quite difficult and expensive.
When he is 6, in two more years, we'll revisit the issue and likely get back to more traveling.

If anything, orthorexia would be the more appropriate analogy, and even that doesn't quite fit.

http://web.mit.edu/jmorzins/www/C-H-speech.html The original speech in full. It has some lines that are just amazing. I grew up 2 towns over from Bill Watterson's town while C&H was at its height. He's a low-key, fairly reclusive guy who was constantly being pursued for interviews by the local p...

I could have written long stretches of that, except that I dropped out of a PhD program and then spent nearly 20 years juggling educational publishing, higher ed administrative positions, and adjuncting in an effort to maintain my "professional status" in academia. Fucking bullshit. I spen...

Giving *anonymously* is key to me. If you're giving out of a sense of empathy, you shouldn't need to look the givee in the eyes, or need public acknowledgement. One who requires (even non-monetary) payment for their "charity" is simply buying something. That's why douchebag celebrities wh...

We are not FI, but we are now in a fairly unique position compared to our circle of friends and family, as I work from home as a fiction writer and my husband just went down to 20 hours/week + benefits, working from home as well. Our quality of life has MASSIVELY improved in the last month since his...

$200/month is what we pay alone out of pocket for speech therapy costs not covered by insurance for my child with significant special needs.
We have two other children.
You can project and predict, but when you have a child with special needs, it all changes.

Re: My FI/Writing Blog: Fiction Fugitive
The free Createspace ISBN is he one that lists CS as your publisher, and buyers for major bookstores turn their noses up at that. The $10 option (which is fairly new) allows you to list yourself, or a publisher's name (like Spartan Warrior Press). It's a layer of legitimacy (? wrong word) you can ad...

Re: My FI/Writing Blog: Fiction Fugitive
@chad -- you create the account and links to sign up. Then you publish your first book with a link in it, encouraging readers to sign up to find out about new releases, sales, etc. The list should grow with each new book if your audience likes your work. Before you're published, though, it's hard to...

Re: My FI/Writing Blog: Fiction Fugitive
I didn't realize you still have the f/t job. BIG difference in strategy, then. I think your plan is sound, with one bit of advice: if you're going for 150 pages, aim for 50K word count. When it comes time to promote, lots of places won't promote anything under that. Though if you later bundle a bunc...
