Re: Low Income, Early 20s, Anti-Wage-Slave Living: Walwen's Journal
It is distressing to watch someone drink 6 sodas, two entire large pizzas, a family-size bag of chips, and then loudly use the bathroom for 30 minutes, the same way I think I'd be upset watching someone binge-drink and start puking.
It is distressing to watch self-destructive behavior in ...

Re: Ego's Journal
When I hear VO2 max I always wonder. It's just a number, right? I'm sporting to feel good. The number is not the goal.
So I hope you have reasons other than VO2 max to endure the "twitchy, exhausted feeling" :D
This is a good point and one I've made here previously regarding measuring workouts ...

Re: Ego's Journal
Seven weeks in. I am running and working out much less than while we were traveling, yet VO2max has improved ever so slightly. I believe the once-weekly REHIIT is responsible for the improvement. The all-out, max effort sprints produce a twitchy, exhausted feeling that I do not get with regular runs ...

Re: Damn it Feels Good to be a Gangsta
I've noticed that once people no longer having to worry about food, security (or money), they change their focus into one---at most two---of the following: "people", "events/places", or "ideas" with much less interest in the other ones. This categorization is eminently stable and people rarely ...

If I understand him correctly, @Ego is taking the position that simpler (=lower value meme) conditions are perhaps necessary to solve the problems of modernity (though using examples of present day societies that have either not reached sufficient complexity to become modern or have collapsed from ...

... a wall externalizes more chaos than a membrane, because a membrane is inherently more intelligent or responsive.
Absolutely. A correctly calibrated response depends on accurate sensing and signaling. Key to this is distinguishing between anxiety-inducing sensationalism and actual threats ...

Re: Big, beautiful US dividend tax increase
I agree that being reactive during times of purposely induced chaos is generally not good.
Keeping an eye on those who are reactive and
thinking through their likely overreactions, then preparing a plan for the overreactions that may have an outsized affect on me, is a better option.

Wanted to ask what the being phase brings.
Perspective. Renewal.
Now, someone with the sufficient ability to envision this can make their own program. Those who can't or won't can acquire a program from someone else.
Likewise, someone with sufficient self-discipline can enforce the program ...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst
The tl;dr is that I believe strongly in doing hard things I don't want to do. But I want to be able to choose which hard things I don't want to do that I want to do. :)
Do you think I'm kidding myself?
I don't know if you are kidding yourself. I think I have a tendency to kid myself. So I am ...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst
I’m more convinced than ever that in the absence of specific and compelling reasons not to (impending mental health emergencies for example, or Ego’s ‘stay hungry’ personal philosophy), getting FI over with is generally speaking The Move. A lot of the effort some people put into to coming up with ...

I have a friend who is a Yacht Broker. We were talking the other day about how his business is the worst he has ever experienced in 40 years in the business. He mentioned that slip fees in Southern California have reached astronomical levels. Many of the marinas are eliminating smaller slips in ...

@Jacob, as you know, for years I was very much against measuring this kind of stuff. Back then I believed that people tended to use them as a way to define the upper limit rather than a baseline and I still think that is true. In other words, they provide limits that are not actually true limits. I ...

Re: Bulk food buyers and storers
A friend of mine bought a storage unit full of these bulk (aprox. 20 liter) food-grade containers with spin on lids. They were from a French pharmaceutical company and originally contained dextrose. He sold them to me for $5 each. I had kept some of the bulk food in our storage locker inside of one ...

I'm very interested to learn how it goes for you if you decide to give it time. Sorry if you've mentioned this here or over in your journal, but are you intending to do the sprints 3x per week?
One thing that has recently occurred to me is that the period of time I was most diligent about quasi ...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.
I mean, I can put together a reasonable argument why something like REHIIT is a good protocol for me to pursue since I have a desire to improve several performance modalities simultaneously as well as having reasons to believe keeping physiological stress minimal (in the hormonal/inflammation sense ...
