Re: Seppia's journal

The outlook is pretty positive, as I’ll be earning in USD a salary that I have negotiated back when the EUR/USD was 1.08 or so, and we will keep thinking in Euro* as the EU is where we plan to end one day. *unless there’s clear signs that Europe will detonate - which I’m not ready to rule out at th...

Re: Social Contagion

Their thoughts are not their own as much as an emergent phenomena that drives group cohesion. That's a convoluted way of saying that some people will change their behavior and what they say and even how they see things according to what the people around them say or do. Crossfitters will be letting...

Re: Who else earns in a currency other than dollars

I sell a lot through ebay's global shipping program. Much of it to Japan. This time last year usdjpy was 110. Today it is 143. I am selling a lot less globally today. Consequently, I am less likely to buy or pay much for things that appeal to these markets. On the other hand, certain niche markets a...

Social Contagion

A group of Crossfitters run past a sidewalk cafe somewhere in Brazil. One patron mistakes them for a group running away from something scary, then another and another. The patrons begin running in the direction the Crossfitters ran. Eventually the entire restaurant is in a panic and follows. https:/...

Re: ERE Motivation:

Many years ago we asked one another the question, "What would you do if money were no object." While the question was posed in the positive - what would we DO? - we soon realized that there was also the implicit, unavoidable question within the question. The negative - what would we NOT DO...

Re: Ego's Journal

Yesterday I had an in person showing of one of my more expensive paintings. I have a place in the lobby with a large otherwise empty wall where the light is good and the buyer can stand back and get a feel for the painting from afar. The potential buyer, a fit guy in his forties wearing exercise clo...

Re: Tactics For Dealing With Predatory Relatives In Old Age

Planning for the last stage of life is unpleasant, but it is important. Social capital is the most important capital. I am in the position to see another one of these situations unfold and getting to watch the familiar catch-22 occur. The old person trusts one child and is reluctant to trust the ot...

I am old enough to remember the old SEPTA electric trolley buses that used the overhead lines but had tires. Best of both worlds?

Re: USA ERE Locations

I'd simply prefer to be in a location that people are going to rather than one they're coming from and it's fairly easy to predict where these locations are. I can see myself believing that I could predict the general area, maybe. But predicting the exact place? This far out? Known-unknowns and unk...

@jacob, our fairly well functional county government seems to be working with the understanding that imported Colorado river water will end. Germ phobia killed the first iteration of toilet-to-tap in Los Angeles but it never went away here. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/san-diego-secured...

@take2, that is very kind. Thank you. If you ever have the good fortune to meet @theanimal(s) in person you will quickly realize as I did that they are redefining what is possibly frugality-wise while continuing to have incredibly adventurous lives.

Re: USA ERE Locations

I'd be interested if anyone has opinions on locations in the US where there is no real winter lol. Well, if cost of living is your primary concern then most forumites would have near-zero heating and cooling costs in coastal SoCal. We just went through the heatwave where it reached the 90s and were...

Re: Packing cubes vs plastic bags or tote bags

I have used them for years. They compress stuff down to small manageable cubes. They organize stuff into winter cube, running cube, food cube, cooking cube. They come in various sizes and can make it efficient to pack unusually sized packs. For instance, Ortlieb panniers taper slightly to the bottom...

Re: The 4% Rule – A Castle in the Air

What has worked out longer is having at least 1 child who can take care of an ailing you in old age. While this is true in much of the world, things have changed very quickly here. In the past I wrote about how adult children were dropping off their senior parents at Soylent Towers. Well, now I am ...

Re: Carpet cleaning

I rolled mine and squeezed the water out, then hung it to dry in the basement with fans blowing on it. That is probably not the correct method because I bike past a company that specializes in cleaning antique carpets and they have a large concrete pad where they leave the carpets to dry face down. ...

Re: Carpet cleaning

Every so often I get an old Oriental wool rug that is dirty. I have done this twice, but rather than use a floor buffer I scrubbed it by hand. A power sprayer can work wonders.
