Re: Ego's Journal

@guitarplayer.... sorry about that. Curtis always seems to leave everything unresolved and convoluted but somehow makes it feel like a crescendo.

Re: Paris

The first Sunday of the month the Louvre, Musée Rodin, Musée Picasso and Musée d'Orsay are all free. The Paris Flea at Saint-Ouen is expensive. The Puces de Vanves is better for real people selling real junk, if you like that kind of thing. The kilo stores can be good for buying interesting second h...

Re: Fixit Log

No one should really be doing this stuff without proper training and gear. You don't know what you don't know until you are falling. GdP, forgive me but I have come to despise the precautionary principle. As a society we would be well served if we applied the precautionary principle to the precauti...

Re: Ego's Journal

'Tis the season for returning to the homestead. Before looking homeward tenants clean out their pantries of perishables and not-so-perishables. Our Thanksgiving menu this year was determined by the discarded sweet potatoes, broccoli, dates, onions, garlic, yams, carrots, apples, peppers, avocados, B...

I just used JB Weld for the exact same problem on an old tent zipper. I still had the crown (tab holder) that had pulled off so I just epoxied it back to the flat slider body.

Re: Living on a hidden aluminum boat

I lived on my 25' wooden sailboat for more than a year in the early 1990s in a free anchorage in Southern California. We spent our honeymoon night on that boat. That was the end of an era. Today the anchorages all have 72 hour limits. I suggested some ideas on what to look for in mooring location he...

Thanks @chenda. I also enjoy this kind of stuff. It reminded me that pre-internet people are nonexistent if someone does not take the time to translate knowledge to bytes. Other than the one reference it is as if he never was. Such as life.

Re: Semi Early Retirement Extreme?

The main argument against semiERE that I perceive is that there's a quantitative difference between 100% employed and 20% employed, but there's a qualitative difference between 20% employed and 0% employed. The reverse is true as well. Having to go from 0% to 20% (or more) is much harder than havin...

Re: Ego's Journal

I spotted two thick artist portfolios in the trunk of a car this weekend. I asked the owner if I could have a look and he enthusiastically handed them to me, explaining that he was given them along with other things in exchange for some handyman work he had done. He couldn't tell me anything about t...

Re: J+G gets a shipping container house

@C40, something like that is getting popular here. They are using a loophole in condominium laws and calling it cloud condos. Typically condos have some common area that is owned by all. With cloud condos the common area is the sky above the property, everything else is owned individually. This allo...

Re: Group Fitness Instructor

Do you regularly attend Zumba classes now? Is it possible to teach martial arts with a group ex cert or do you need to have passed through the belt levels before being considered for an instructor position? Most gyms are desperate for instructors right now. What experiences and certifications are th...

Re: J+G gets a shipping container house

@Ego - I assume the DG was used to slope existing land up to the bed of the trailer / entrance to container? What was it actually parked on? Actually the trailers were (and still are) parked on DG parking plots. I seem to remember it was dumped, flattened, tamped with a compactor and rolled with a ...

Re: J+G gets a shipping container house

DG is decomposed granite. Here in SoCal is makes for a good base as it seems to discourage growth and is good drainage. YMMV. We had to keep the trailers registered and the axels connected. If you purchase the trailer from a place that sells lots of them they may deliver it without wheels and tires ...

Re: J+G gets a shipping container house

I have a little experience with this many years ago in SoCal. Check zoning before buying property. Consider leaving it on a flatbed trailer as that may allow you to completely bypass zoning restrictions. You can landscape around the trailer and it is already 3" off the ground. The cost of a tra...

@WRC, yes we are still in the property management gig. Normally about this time (2 years in) we are beginning to prepare for the next trip but this time around we are really enjoying our current place and are considering hanging onto it. I agree. Paris would certainly be on the itinerary for vintage...

@WRC, another area we were thinking about is vintage couture dresses. I have a friend who makes a killing at it selling almost exclusively on instagram. The markups she gets are unbelievable. We have had two recent successes in this area but they were flukes. I wasn't specifically looking for old dr...
