Re: Something From Nothing Log

Found a hairdryer on top of the trash. Yes, you guessed it, the circuit interrupter had blown and the resent button needed to be pressed. Works perfectly. Nearby was a stainless cup. The tenant who tossed it is an artist. She put a paintbrush in the cup by accident (I assume). I sprayed a li...

Re: Something From Nothing Log

Mrs. Ego took out the trash last night and came back with a Hoover bagless HEPA filter vacuum cleaner. Sells for $98 on Amazon. She tested it this morning and found that it is in perfect condition. Strangely, our apartments have only hardwood floors.

I do not know how people pay for everything. In the Loh piece she talked about paying $5K a month for in-home care. There is NO WAY i can afford that, and I'm the only person in my small family with any money whatsoever. I'm sure when the time comes she's gong to have to be in a dismal Medicaid nur...

Re: The Glove Compartment

Intermediate cold weather leather military gloves with wool liners last forever, are fairly waterproof and meet most of your other requirements. Get the full leather gloves, not the flyer's. You can get them second-hand (literally :D ) inexpensively. You can glom them with bees wax and use a hair dr...

, and wishing for that to change is equivalent to wishing my mom was gone--which I don't. I took the day off yesterday and took her lunch and hung out for a while--all we did was watch TV and chat about inconsequential things, but I'm glad to be able to do that. I will miss her terribly when she's ...

Along the same lines as Something From Nothing.... The Fifty Dollar Shop. The guy bought a few basic tools and supplies for under $50 and will use them to build up a fully stocked wookworking shop by creating things and selling them, then using the proceeds to make or buy additional tool. https://ww...

Anyone else using one of these? Some of the other options are Lojack, Computrace and Cisco Meraki.

Hat tip to both Tyler Cowen and David Brooks , The All-or-Nothing Marriage, How the Best Marriages Work. https://www.amazon.com/All-Nothing-Marriage-Best-Marriages/dp/052595516X Brooks's column is excellent, contrasting the two models of human development. Re: How much trouble can I get in renting a spare room out on Airbnb?

I agree with Eureka. One of the key skills of a successful property managers is to not notice petty violations of the lease that are not causing problems. A nice tenant who pays rent on time and who does not cause problems is a valuable asset. So, don't cause problems and you'll probably be left alo...

Re: Can one control one's thoughts?

In the interest of maximizing mental well being, can one guide or control the constant stream of thoughts in one's mind? no yes  It depends. What do you mean by: - guide or control? - thoughts? - in one's mind? I think the different definitions may be at the heart of the different responses of...

What size do you buy? How often do you use and how long does your supply last? In early June I ordered two pounds and just finished it. I put a heaping spoonful (maybe 2-3 teaspoons) in my tea infuser kettle which makes two liters of tea. I drink about five liters of this tea per day, maybe more if...

Re: Which Brands & Sources of Rice Have the Least Arsenic?

I don't have a good answer for the rice question. According to Consumer Reports, most of the arsenic is in the bran, so white rice has less than brown, but I don't eat white rice. They also say that rice from California is better than rice from other areas of the country. Since you are a fan of Dr. ...

I see the ability to be extroverted as a skill. Like any other skill, it can be used in a wide variety of ways to save and earn money. If someone lacks the ability to be outgoing or struggles to direct their attention to things other than themselves, they may struggle to get things done with others....

+1 bluepearl. Note: Ebay was having problems with people selling stuff for 1 cent then charging $25 for shipping to avoid paying final value fees, so they began charging final value fees on shipping fees as well. So you might as well just offer free shipping and figure it into the cost of the item. ...
