Re: Intellectual Dark Web

Score another one for financial independence. FI used to be called 'independent means' and I like that term better. It's probably closer to ERE principles than FIRE. And as you said, independent means allow for independent thought. I wouldn't necessarily classify the IDW as solely a reaction to SJW...

Pretend to talk on the phone or wear headphones (or both) when in public areas. I do this constantly to avoid people. I even do it in my own home. 8-)

Re: Suomalaisen Päiväkirja

Family ties can be productive or destructive, and friendships can certainly trump family ties if you're good at forming strong friendships. When it comes to crises and SHTF scenarios however, I think family relationships can sometimes be more desirable, not because they are better but because they a...

Intellectual Dark Web

I'm not sure what everyone's thoughts are on the IDW. I like some more than others, but all are refreshing in their refusal to be herded. This Rebel Wisdom video is pretty good. I particularly like the discussion with Eric Weinstein towards the beginning where he argues that we should tolerate the e...

Re: Tulsi 2020: Anti-war Democrat says she’s running for US president

Gabbard's candidacy is a positive step for Democrats. She brings in some fresh issues but also doesn't have much baggage (she definitely wasn't in the "I'm with her" crowd last time). I'm keeping a full list of potential candidates if anyone is interested. There are 20+ on it already. In other news,...

Re: The soft coup against US President Trump

if Mueller's office was so quick to come out to refute this report from BuzzFeed.... does that mean a significant portion of "the other stuff that has been reported/said/speculated-on by all kinds of sources" has a lot of truth to it? I believe the main reason Mueller's office publicly disputed the...

Re: Used Electric

Did US BMW ever agree to sell upgraded batteries for older models of the i3? If so, the i3 would be a nice car even if you have to pay a few thousand to upgrade the battery to meet your needs.

“… what do you consider your mission, either for the time being, or in life? How do you justify it in the broader scheme of things, or looking past your own death?” I realize I don’t fit your criteria since I have both kids and a religious bent, but my answer isn’t really based on either of those q...

Re: Getting Divorced.

Yes, it's a double standard. You're only interested in women who don't have too many miles on them but then get mad when women are choosy. Shouldn't they be choosy if they are socially penalized for having as many partners as men? A quick read shows this thread throwing shade on women, catholics, re...

Re: Deep Adaptation

@daylen--I think maybe it's as simple as people believing that less = bad, or change = bad, whether or not both are good in the end, and even when the people in question are like Bendell and know that change is necessary. The whole mindset is based on holding on to as much as possible and learning t...

I don't think I'm explaining myself well. I'm not talking about the grief we feel for the loss of ecosystems or abundance, or even the displacements and burdens that might be placed on poorer communities. That kind of grief is always in the ether for those who choose to take such things to heart (po...

Sorry, didn't realize you are in an urban setting. There are talkies that work through wifi (if you have city-wide coverage) but I think they cost a bit more.
