Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

@THF -- I'm going to give you advice even though you don't want it and it goes against some basic tenets of ERE. You need to live a little. Take a barbell approach to your ERE plan. Put 90% of your finances and effort (emotional as well as time) into your ERE plan, and live a little with the rest. T...

Re: Jordan Peterson

That podcast was good. Roberts touched on some of the crossovers between JBP's and JLF's ideas and helped me see why JBP appeals to some forumites.

His comments about chaos and order and how to be content were brilliant.

Re: How Many Allowances to Claim on W4 Tax Form?

Make sure you calculate your allowances based on the new tax rules, not the old ones. Would you have owed taxes for '17 based on '18's rules? I'm not sure how you owe so much more. Was the $10K a raise or bonus? Then the taxes should have come out of your paycheck. Was it a new business and you didn...

Can you still enter your info for free on TurboTax? (it used to be that you didn't pay anything until it was time to file) That would be a way to check numbers between two different programs. Have you updated your HR file? There were changes included in the Debt bill a couple of weeks ago. Have they...

We participated in the bird census this weekend and it was fun! It's still open today if anyone wants to do it. The Great Backyard Bird Count I'm planning my garden. I always focus (too much) on production. I'm going to start evaluating my garden's success on more than just food production. We've ad...

Re: Guns in America

What qualifies as statistically needing it? A reasonable threat of violence? If that's the case, then all women should be armed since 1 in 4 experience domestic abuse, 1 in 3 experience sexual violence and/or stalking, etc. That's half the country right there. I also believe governments have been th...

Re: polyamory and polygamy

An older thread you might find interesting ... https://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=6547 I have no inherent objection to polygamy as long as both men and women are allowed to have multiple spouses. I haven't seen any good studies though on the effects of such arrangements on...

Re: Fox's Journey: Out of the Burrow

Roommate interviews have been going OK. I found two compatible NF people ... Are you guessing that they're 'NF' people or are you making them take a test? I'm mostly just curious because it wouldn't surprise me if some of the MBTI groupies here actually made potential roommates take a test. I suppo...

Re: Guns in America

@TD -- If you're looking for a reason for the mass shootings, I don't think it's about gun laws. If it were only about access to guns, you'd see different types of people committing these acts. The profiles of most of the shooters are eerily similar. I think the shootings might be the canary in a co...

Re: Guns in America

Mass shootings are frightening and unpredictable, so people tend to react emotionally — kind of like public reactions to Ebola. More people will die this year from the flu than from all Ebola and Marburg deaths combined (ever), yet people take flu deaths in stride for the most part just like they do...

Ok ... I know you're making fun of me, but I don't get how. You can't replace all of the dowels but you can replace the inside ones that aren't part of the structure. fyi: I've used this portable clothesline for 6 years and it's never broken even though I drag it inside and outside all the time, my ...

Re: Clothes drying rack repairing and building

You can replace the inside dowels with nylon rope.

That kind of rope is easy to string between any two points and then you don't need a drying rack. I keep some in my suitcase to use as a makeshift clothesline when I'm traveling.

@slowtraveler -- Any combination of Wellington funds should be easy enough to track in a spreadsheet. Beyond that there are several places that will let you set up dummy accounts. Re: Investing Process - or how to think about investing

When I use the term 'trader', I'm talking about trading as something completely different than investing. Investors see value in owning a product. Traders see value in selling a product. Obviously, that's my own personal take on it. re: experience -- You can gain a lot of experience without actually...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Instruments like SVXY and UVXY are used by traders. They can be a lot more volatile than the market and can move more in line with traders than the market overall. Just FYI before anyone puts their money into them. Most traders fear getting caught in those overnight. For example, here is SVXY after ...
