Re: The Happiest Guy In The World

That article I remembered was from AOM ... https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/how-to-cross-the-ocean-on-a-freighter-ship/ Living aboard a cruise ship isn't ERE level, maybe MMM or in between depending on how willing you are to chase the best deal. I was only pointing out that it's not a bad lif...

Re: Preparing for the next recession

Have your excuses prepared for why you're not in a position to loan money to friends/family.

Second part of that would be don't tell people how prepared you are, and commiserate with them during the recession instead of talking about how well you're doing. It will help you avoid the need for excuses.

Re: The Happiest Guy In The World

I did the math a few years ago and it came out to $42K/year for two people. There are groups that cater to this (like Seniors at Seas) and support forums. It's not much different than van dwellers or any other alternative lifestyle. It costs more, but not as much as you'd think. I bet I could do it ...

Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

Sorry if I'm derailing the current thrust of the thread but I thought people interested in the OP might be interested in this PBS interview with Richard Reeves who wrote a book last year (Dream Hoarders) detailing the problem. The author's approach is too liberal-leaning for me, but he does articula...

Re: Off-grid water filtration

@2B1S--Sawyer filters are better than Lifestraws and are easy to carry around. Some people I know swear by MSR Guardian purifiers and say they are more effective. It's always good to do a quick DIY filter first if you can so you don't 'use up' the good filter too quickly. If it were me, I'd boil any...

The balcony looks lovely on the smaller one. Is the kitchen well-appointed? It doesn't have to be big, but functional is really important when you cook. (or are most kitchens designed for cooks in Italy as compared to the US?)

There was a good thread with some concrete suggestions but I can't find it now. Maybe it had to do with meditation? Does anyone else remember it?

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

I get that motorcycles are really fun to ride. I love riding them, too. And in the right conditions, they aren't that dangerous. C40 was asking about using one for basic transportation though, and in congested conditions they are definitely less safe (and less fun). I'm not arguing that people shoul...

Re: A Journey of Mindfulness--the Remaking of Life in Midstream.

Living deliberately is a purpose, no? I liked Peterson's 12 Rules for Life. I also liked his last conversation with Joe Rogan and his appearance on EconTalk. One thing I like about Peterson is he recommends only looking 3-5 years out. Good advice for those of us who are planning-obsessed and try to ...

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

I love motorcycles, but it seems like when you go that route you give up the safety of a car as well as the benefits of a bike (health, environment, cost). Am I missing the benefit of choosing a motorcycle over the other two? I'll admit I'm biased though. I'd never want to play chicken on a bike or ...

ffj suggested honeysuckle on the fence for privacy. That's working extremely well. Re: The 9.9 Percent Is the New American Aristocracy

I'm not sure anyone in Stepford would feel guilty after reading that article. They might say they did if it came up at a party, but while reading it privately? Probably not. The feeling would be more "There, but for the grace of God, go I" or something along those lines ... an acknowledgment of luck...

A related, casual discussion on CheapRVLiving's site with Randy Vining ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjTGF4jPdCY

I like how Vining talks about 'generating' meaning instead of finding it. Gives a person more control over the process.

Re: Mortgage Recasting

Ok, I see the math works. My bad. Why would the bank do it though? Banks offered recasting several years ago as part of the TARP program but I thought that ended. Does it make make the bank look better somehow? Does it count as a new refi or customer on their books? Is it easier for the bank to repa...

Re: FIRE reaching Critical Mass

Based on a conversation I had today, I wonder if it's not that there are more people interested in FIRE, only that there are more people interested in blogging about FIRE. The proliferation of FIRE blogs doesn't necessarily translate to a proliferation of people actively working towards FIRE. The sa...
