Re: Going card free?

I almost never use cash anymore. I can't remember the last time I used notes or coins. Lots of shops here will now only take card since covid. On my 18th birthday my bank just sent me credit card with a £2000 limit. Hardly surprising that many of my friends quickly got into serious financial trouble...

Re: How many of you are low energy?

Minimalism did for a while but seems rather commercialized these days as the focus has shifted from simple living to which minimalist product is optimal. I know you're not a fan of videos but Matt D'Avella, who is one of the most prominent minimalists on you tube, did a video touching this. https:/...

Re: Flat-rate capital gains tax throwing a wrench in viability of FIRE?

Same as every other capital gain - the whole dividend counts as capital gain, and gets taxed with 19% rate. Dividends (and rent and earned income) are not considered capital gains here and are taxed differently. That said, I think if your ERE strategy relies on a particular tax system, you strategy...

Re: Home free?

Perhaps you could just own some land, which would retain the option of a home without the costs ?

Re: How many of you are low energy?

I find I only have 3 - 4 hours of optimal concentration per day, usually late morning to early afternoon. Outside that zone I'm pretty useless at anything remotely challenging so maybe you could find your best time and distribute it throughout the week rather than maxing out too early in the week ?

Re: Tasting the Pickle: Ten flavours of the meta-crisis...

@jacob yeah english is very unusual in having an egalitarian form of address, it still creates social awkwardness in french knowing which one to use although tu is ever more common. japanese traditionally had 17 forms of address or something. actually your last paragraph helps me understand this muc...

Re: Tasting the Pickle: Ten flavours of the meta-crisis...

To give an example of a 4th person expansion pack. It used to be ... or at least it happens in the literature ... that when people are communicating in a romantic or respectful manner the pronouns would shift to Thou instead of you to convey the deliberate/aware shift in perspective. German still h...

Re: Tasting the Pickle: Ten flavours of the meta-crisis...

Rowson interestingly has become a Hindu.

All this stuff about colours, flavours, quadrants and meta stuff entirely goes over my head. This may reflect the limitations of my head.

But I wonder if there's just far too much intellectuallisation going on.

Re: The practicalities of dealing with supply issues

Yes the other problem is that many container ships were prematurely sold for scrap during the pandemic, as they were costing the companies too much sitting idle incurring docking fees. Many of these ships had years of life left in them, and it will take a long time to build up fleets again. Sourcing...

Re: The practicalities of dealing with supply issues

I think it's going to be wise to keep a perpetual surplus of household essentials and toiletries, perhaps 6 - 8 weeks worth, which can be achieved relatively easily with minimal extra storage space. It's usually just a case of always keeping a spare bottle. I've been doing this on-and-off for the la...

@western red cedar - interesting, I agree the aesthetic appeal is a big advantage as well as the technical benefits. Does you username reflect a connection to the industry ? :)
