Re: DutchGirl's journal

@Dutchgirl - Can you understand much German as a dutch speaker ? Dutch is supposed to be the easiest language for a native English speaker to learn. I want to develop ideas about what to do next in life. And actually also how to enjoy my life more. Maybe I'm asking too much - I used to be depressed ...

Re: Gold

See the story of David Hahn, the American boy scout who built a homemade nuclear reactor in his parents garden shed. Radioactive isotopes were frequently used on old glow-in-the-dark clocks from the 1960s and smoke detectors and various other sources: With his newly made neutron gun, David was ready...

Re: Gold

It seems to work well as part of a planned strategy like in the permanent portfolio (25%)

But I like bright shiny things :)

Re: Bodyweight exercises

Are you ripped yet? It has been a couple weeks since the first post so I assume at least shredded. ;) haha I don't know what counts as shredded but my upper body definitely feels a lot tighter and my bicepts feel as if they are bulging somewhat. During the plank torture I keep thinking summer...

Re: ERE with small children in a large city

Thank you for your input. It should make sense with a big house, but at the same time it's speculation that the prices will continue up. If we stay there for a long time, it will probably be a good deal, but it does postpone retirement by a few years. Being able to grow your own vegetables, perhaps...

Welcome Mammoth. I don't know what journals would be best to read but sounds like the big house makes sense for you.

Re: Bodyweight exercises

With those dumbbells you can get the upper body "pull" motion going, but you can also do this with doorway pull-ups as I described above. Both are basically the same movement pattern and hit similar muscles. It's helpful to have a variety of methods to hit muscle chains. Thanks Dave. I ha...

Re: Food and climate change

Interesting, I have never heard of Pangolins before but they look too cute to eat :(

I agree artificial meat could be the future, I'd like to transition to it if it was more affordable, maybe that's where agricultural subsidies should be heading.

Re: Food and climate change

I wonder if this problem will sort of fix itself, if climate change disrupts food grain production prices will rise and meats will increasingly become an expensive luxury, factory farms too costly to run and meat provided at a local level as @western suggests.

I've never understood the 'web of goals' thing, it makes no sense to me, if anyone can explain it in simple terms.

Re: The Road Goes on Forever--Sometimes in Circles

I sometimes feel icky participating in Buddhism as I feel westerners have an itch to commodify it and compartmentalize it. I read Living Buddha Living Christ as a teen and felt I needed to find a western tradition instead of bastardizing an eastern one. Given my (newly learned) disdain for Christia...

Re: Bodyweight exercises

Hi @ella, thanks for the recommendation. That's interesting because when I've had meltdowns I feel completely detached from my body. It's weird, it's like a third party viewing, I'm thinking 'She's really loosing it this time'. This was exacerbated by meditation, which turned out to be really bad fo...

just like spammers who make grammatical mistakes on purpose to select for the cognitively disabled,
I didn't know that was the reason but it makes perfect sense. Evil people taking advantage of the weak and vulnerable.

Re: How much do you give to charity?

I recall a well known charity sending a transparent plastic sachet of brown coloured water to people on their mailing list as an example of the dirty water the poor have to drink. I thought that was a bit overkill, like hungry Gloris. There was also a spoof documentary made in the 90s where they dup...
