Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI

@Alphaville I was mostly joking in my comments with regards to keeping masses away from my stockpile. A bunker is not my primary design motivation. My primary motivation is energy efficiency with an eye to creating some kind of scalable retrofit model. In the region, it is quite common for developer...

Re: Modern Icebox

Yes we've had the cooler with rotating ice packs for 2.5 weeks now and neither of us have had any issues. We currently are just using water bottles that we had as ice packs. Something more substantial might be better, but I'm not sure what the alternative might be. Once the ground thaws, we'll try ...

Re: Modern Icebox

if you have a chest freezer, might be doable though. Just rotate ice packs as you said. Not very different from winter use, which i found very tolerable. I’d be tempted to have a go at that strategy, and if you don’t like it sell the cooler and spring for a fridge. Every time I think I have a somew...

great analysis on the rowhouses. plus it can be converted to 3 apartments in high value areas (basement, middle, and top floor which has entrance from back alley). i hope you score a good deal when the time comes. I've been thinking more about basement apartments. Nearly every older home in the reg...

Re: Green Tech Future Revival?

but i've been toying with the idea of experimenting with a solar oven at some point... I would think solar cooking would be pretty viable in your desert region due to abundant sun, depending of course on the direction your balcony faces. Solar panel cookers seem like a common option that could repl...

Re: How much do you give to charity?

i didn't mind using online because i wasn't sending payment to a band of narcotraficantes. i was just giving money to a reputable charity which i thought would respect my wishes when i clicked the "anonymous" box. but no! i guess that was the last they'll hear from me :| A lot of the char...

Re: 7Wannabe5- Take 7- The Money Dimple

A great deal of it is gender based, but my personal demeanor and use of slower, less powerful tools are also factors. I was actually trying to picture the behavior of a lone female attempting physical task or project that would provoke different response and it occurred to me that my sister and I w...

Re: How much do you give to charity?

Yeah if you are sending a payment using a traditional platform there is no such thing as anonymous. There are ways to get around this using things like prepaid gift cards, burner emails, alias names, fake addresses, etc but it’s probably more work than the typical non-paranoid person wants to do.

I should clarify that she said she has never helped a new roommate move in that she wasn’t previously friends with. So if it was someone already within her social circle she would help, but I guess in her mind “new roommate” is basically a stranger and hasn’t entered social circle yet?

Re: 7Wannabe5- Take 7- The Money Dimple

@7WB5 I wonder how much of it is also gender based? Men are just wired to help women with physical activities because they believe it is the polite thing to do. Many men are even raised to think that not helping a woman is unacceptable behavior (e.g. go help your Mom unload the groceries). I recentl...

Re: How much do you give to charity?

There's also the issue of being notorious as the person with lots of money to give away. May attract unwanted attention. Alternately you could maybe become the Godfather. This is a risk in my mind too. Those solicitations for more donations might take the form of people knocking at your door or har...

Yes, that was what I was trying to get at. Another great option is to try to get an internship and some hands on experience. If it’s at least a medium sized company then you will get to understand and see firsthand the roles of the service desk, system engineers, network engineers, developers, and s...

Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI

Work has been slow and I’m at this awkward period where I am mentally checked out of my current location but it is too early to begin packing things for my move. So I’ve been spending a lot of time learning about various ecological topics related to homes. If you recall from earlier posts (see here ...

Re: Digital Minimalism?

I think a Pareto principle analysis would be useful. What 20% of what you are doing online is most harmful? What 20% is most beneficial? I agree with this. I find this forum very useful. I also peruse APnews which is debatably useful but should probably limit it to a 10 minute window once a day (I’...

Re: How Does This Sound's Journal

I think CEH is a money grab, but if you see job listings that require it then it might still be worth getting. What you will find is there is a distinction between management and technical/engineer roles in cyber security so there are certs that tailor to each. If you want to do a hands on keyboard ...

Your clearance is still good for 2 years after you leave Active Duty. Are you planning on working on the government side (GS or contractor) or in non-defense industry? I think A+ and Net+ are unnecessary and you could just skip to SEC+. If you want to learn network stuff then do CCNA. They are all e...

Re: The Road Goes on Forever--Sometimes in Circles

So it sounds like the HVAC technician was right, but now at least you know for sure and have learned a little bit about how AC's work in the process. I'd still say that's a net positive. You can figure out whether buying an ultra-efficient AC makes sense from a money perspective by doing the math. T...

Re: Advice for complete beginners in renovation/repairs?

@Ertyu What is your list of projects? I am by no means an expert on home renovation/repair stuff, but I do believe step one is figuring out what you want to do and what is actually feasible. Then you can prioritize and do some research on what it makes sense to do first. Along with Youtube, I recomm...

I know you’re not at this stage yet, but what are you planning on doing for insulation? I’ve been watching some videos of LEED requirements which nowadays seem to recommend using spray-in because I guess it has the most coverage. I think you mentioned maybe using a heat pump or wood/pellet stove for...
