Re: My retirement scoreboard, Part II

Despite what the permabears on FinTwit say, Credit Suisse is well-capitalized and default risk is very low. Having said that, the bank has had issues in recent years and may very well announce restructuring with their next earnings call. This isn’t a Lehman moment.

Re: Investments Trade Log

In related news, my PSQ and RWM positions have finally gone positive again (5-10% profit at the moment). I think we have some more downside to go so I'll be holding on to them until I see more signs that a recession is priced in to markets. Despite the past few weeks of downward price action for equ...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Things may be breaking GBP collapsing, Yen collapsing, all non-usd currencies getting pummelled. Fed powering forward while we are clearly in a recession already (just look at container rates for one example) The recent collapse of the GBP is due to the UK government announcing tax cuts and energy ...

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

I don't agree that this 'kneecap's one social capital at all! I think this might be true if social capital were a difficult thing for the individual to develop and the college network was strong. I think social capital can be very independent of any formal education setting. I've moved several time...

My Life Now That I'm Back I'm on the family land, the land that is going to fall to me when my parents go. It's on the edge of the Mojave desert. It's 30 miles from town. There are less than a dozen neighbors, the nearest is a mile away. We're bordered by BLM, national forest, and designated wilder...

Re: Your Personal Operating System

Maybe I'm spoiled, but living in the Fallout-ish world in which I have to scavenge for bricks to build a stove so that I can have warm food, or go around and scavenge for bike parts so that i can move around does not sound much better than outright dying to me. It just sounds like a lot of unpleasa...

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

I think this applies if, and only if, you stay nearish to your college. I moved away immediately and my college has had next to nothing to do with my current life. For my siblings who stayed closer, it might be different. I didn't go to a top Ivy league school, but I have to imagine that those scho...

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

My DD31 went to VERY expensive private school on academic scholarship. Beyond class signifier, it also had a good deal of influence on her current social circle and choice of husband. This. In my experience, college usual has a large influence on social circles. If you go to a state school, your so...

Re: Chronicle of black_son_of_gray's failures

Neat! Any updates since this post? I still have the whole kit in a portable carrying bag designed for bicycle wheels, but I haven't set it up recently. I will test it some more at some point soon, especially if I order a small cast iron skillet. I also have a small dual purpose camping stove/grill ...

Re: USA ERE Locations

Steering this discussion back towards the OP, I think it's important to evaluate all of the infrastructure already available in a location because the pace of infrastructure change in the USA is so painfully slow. So most likely, whatever infrastructure they have now will be the same in 20 years wit...

It seems the ones in Philadelphia use a 4.5L diesel generator that can act as emergency power. For the transit nerds out there, here is the model (except the buses do have AC): https://cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/New_Fly ... ies_E40LFR

Re: USA ERE Locations

I am old enough to remember the old SEPTA electric trolley buses that used the overhead lines but had tires. Best of both worlds? In an unfortunate move, SEPTA discontinued most of those many years ago in favor of diesel buses but still retained many of the old-style (loud) track trolleys. Trolley ...

Re: USA ERE Locations

White belt could you tell me some good examples of these? I'd like to explore them on Google Street view. Here's a video that goes in depth on the design pattern. It shows an example town in Canada, but the overall concept is the same in US streetcar suburbs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWsGBRd...

Re: USA ERE Locations

@Zbigi Yeah, there are downsides for sure. Like you said, a trolleybus might be a better solution in a lot of cases. I'm a big fan of retrofitting what we already have whenever possible, rather than pulling more materials out from the ground to make a brand new solution. In Philadelphia, there are 8...

Are there any CityNerd fans here? I really enjoyed this video about undervalued US cities. Particularly the point he makes around 9:20 about just how much cheaper some of these cities are compared to HCOL metros... Cleveland average home value is around $107k vs LA which is around $930k, a differen...

Re: USA ERE Locations

I'd be interested if anyone has opinions on locations in the US where there is no real winter lol. So far I've been trying various beach places, but I'm open to anything with no winter. I grew up with snow and cold and now hate it. I have tried some places, but so far it seems that any place that i...

Re: USA ERE Locations

I have always lived in suburbs or in the city. I have really enjoyed being in a relatively dense walkable city environment. So I'm aiming for that right now. I like people and I feel that if I was in a rural setting I would get lonely quickly. Plus, in a rural setting a car is pretty necessary, whi...

Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI

I've made my Magic friends when we bonded over playing tournaments competitively (incl. sharing cards, discussing strategies, playtesting before the tournament, travelling together etc.). I've read somewhere that men bond over a common, shared goal and it was absolutely the case there. It could be ...

Re: Wargaming

I tried playing Warhammer 40k: Kill Team with some guys at work. It's an interesting game that seems to take a lot of the positive aspects of more traditional wargames like 40k, while trying to mitigate some of the inconvenient/expensive aspects. It’s played on a 2 ft x 2.5 ft board with teams made ...

Re: White Belt's Military Journey to FI

As far as escapes go, this one's pretty great :) It's even better if you know someone else who also plays in the same formats as you, then you can discuss strategies etc. I pretty much talk Magic daily with my best friend, even if it's some quick remarks making fun of some of his deck preferences e...
