Re: What is a "good" work ethic, and how do you sustain one?

In whatever task is in front of you, pretend you are the person that is paying for it to get done. Act accordingly. That will result in a 'good' work ethic.

Re: Recommendation for a New Laptop for Wife

I found the best value in used pro laptops. I bought a 2016 Dell Latitude last year for $300 if I remember correctly, had another used Dell Latitude from 2008-9 or so before. They tend to be more resistant and in general better assembled than the consumer products, if you’re lucky the seller will “...

Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

Teaching is a whole lot of work, a lot of which is not appreciated by anyone. Throw in disinterested or troublesome or unprepared students and parents that run the gamut from absent to hovering to full of blame, and it is a tough profession. All for not much money. Time off is above average if you a...

Lively HSA has no fees. You can invest every dollar of your HSA/don't have to keep anything in cash. Investments are made through TD Ameritrade. Limited number of investment choices, but they cover a wide spectrum of basic funds.

$40 in wallet $500 worth of twenties in house $4500 deposited in checking once a quarter that I live on. (12)1 year CDs at $5,000 each. Each one matures on the 15th of each month. If I don't need it for an emergency, I renew it for another year. If I need it, I use it, and replace it in the rotation...

I've never used cbd, but I know that when looking for supplements you should look to see if the manufacturer is GMP compliant.

Any antiinflammatories should help too. You could cut some aleve into the proper dose and hide it in a hotdog.
Aleve will kill a dog. They can't process it.

Re: How has your job and income changed in the last 2 decades?

I do a lot more now than I did then. I was lucky that when I started, I had an older Engineer as a role model. He was the guy who never stopped learning, and could do things that others his age couldn't or wouldn't. I tried to model myself after him as best I could and not after the guys who looked ...

Re: How do most people do this whole compulsory 9-5 thing for 40+ years?

I'm going on 25 years of full time work, albeit at 7 different companies. I don't find it boring yet. I just want an exit strategy and an ERE approach makes a good one for me. Plus it has given me a nice systems problem to solve - increase passive income, lower expenses, become more resilient and se...

If you tell them you are depressed as a reason for not getting your work done, I hope you have a doctor's diagnosis to back that up. HR people at big bureaucratic organizations like universities can be 'sticklers' for coloring inside the lines so to speak. They are most definitely not your friend.

I recommend a local credit union as well. I have a checking account at one and an online account at Capital One with free checking and a money market. Capital one also has regular savings and CD options that are competetive.

I grew up there from 1974 (age 2) to 1990 (age 18), and later worked there for a while in the mid 90s. I like the City, but it has it's struggles. I grew up in Whitehaven and lived out in Bartlett later.

It's a journey, not a destination. A little platitude there to remind you to just enjoy the ride. You seem smart enough to do whatever it is you want, just need to find it.

Yeah, to me $1400 a month is a crazy price for a pod. But I don’t get the whole “gotta live in New York/LA/San Francisco thing, either. $1800 a month in Memphis would buy or rent you a 4 BR/3 BA home on almost half an acre. In a GOOD neighborhood. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2548-Strathspey-...

I have a lot of watches. Vintage mechanical Hamiltons are what I enjoy most. Also quite a few Seikos. Timex. Casio. Ben Russ. Bulova. 1 vintage Rolex.

I don't buy the fashion brands like Fossil or Geneva. Just don't care for the flashy look of most of them.

I just like them.

The twenty year olds down the block have given up mowing their yard. I hope they get it done before they turn 25 lest it revert back to jungle.
