Re: What's a good place to open a brokerage account?

Fidelity has a no fee total stock index I believe.

For active trading, I second the TDAmeritrade suggestion.

Re: Should I contribute to my Roth IRA this year?

I hold mostly REIT ETFs in my Roth account. They are down as an asset class right now, so if you interested in them, it is not the worst time to buy some.

Re: ffj's early retirement

Sorry to hear about your dog and your tree Jeff. Best of luck to your mother's recovery. I lost five oaks in a storm four years ago. Four toppled and one snapped in half. My lot is in the city and was originally four lots but three are unbuildable due to a drainage structure/flood plain, so they are...

Re: Headphone recommendations

Grado headphones sound great and are made in Brooklyn. Entry level model is the SR60 I believe. They aren't cheap, but they are quality.

Re: COVID-19

I went to the home depot to stock up on trash bags, hvac filters, got some paint and wood for garage repairs, etc. I only saw two people not in masks. One old guy, and one early teen. The teen had his around his neck, but not over his face.

Re: Water meter question

Most residential water meters are mechanical, even if they have a digital display or are wirelessly connected. They don't really register really low flows very well, and sometimes not at all. If your register is not changing at the low drip you have going, it most likely is not registering. Would ne...

Re: ffj's early retirement

I've been doing a lot of landscape, gardening, and grass cutting here lately which has slowed my progress with building. Today I planted 200 tomato plants that I started from seed in my new garden. These guys looked a little rough around the edges as I started them early and they had to endure some...

Re: COVID-19

Interesting if true on the MMR effect. I had the vaccine as a child and then again at 17 (1990) before I enrolled at college because my parents couldn't find a record of my original vaccination, and the college I went to required proof of vaccination to enroll.

I think most mindless travel is a complete waste of resources. In this case, you want to visit a bunch of places for less than a day each that are under some varying degree of lockdown so that you can choose one to move to?

Nice shop. What general area of Kentucky are you in? I have family all over the state. Quite a few are such a mess that they could be your neighbors unfortunately.

I've been reading The Catcher in the Rye most every year since Sophomore year in HS (1988). Not sure why other than I enjoy it immensely.

Re: Is doing your own car mechanics "normal"?

I've done quite a bit over the years.

Belts
Water pumps
Oil changes
Thermostats
O2 sensors
Body work
Hoses
Batteries
Coolant flush
PCV valves
AC charging
Air filters
Bulbs
Probably a few other things

It's gotten easier over time because of confidence and YouTube.

Re: COVID-19

Have those of you who are going out noticed that people aren't staying in anymore? Starting this past weekend, I've noticed way more people driving around and on the street. Mask compliance is slightly higher than before (around 20%) and social distancing compliance is about the same. I go to the o...
