Re: New Employer - No 401(k)

That at least makes some sense. Our HR people had no idea, and pretty much looked at me like I was insane for asking to contribute that much.

Re: New Employer - No 401(k)

For whatever reason, my 401k plan will only let you contribute up to 50% of my paycheck per pay period. This is the first one I've had that has that rule, but I'm assuming they do it for a reason that others might also do, so that could come into play if you are trying to max it out with only a few ...

Re: Off-grid water filtration

I've worked in the water and wastewater industry, both public and private sides for my whole career of 24 years. What all the home filters miss on imo is follow up testing. Municipal water systems for average size cities can do hundreds of thousands of tests per year at their plants and in their dis...

Re: Do you have bonds in your portfolio?

I have a municipal bond fund in my brokerage account and a TIP fund in my IRA. No bonds in my Roth, HSA, or 401k. About 10% of my total. I also hold REITS, cash, domestic and international equities, utilities, commodities, and an annuity. Domestic equities are the majority of my holdings. Shotgun ap...

Re: cheap tires for a car?

Because you mentioned them, Uniroyals are good tires. Michelin owns the brand now. If you can get them for cheap, I wouldn't hesitate.

Re: Bought a bike today, and....

Memphis is nice and flat for biking, but all kinds of hot and humid this time of year. Enjoy the bike.

$400 a month on digital programming, such as Netflix and Redbox.
brute has no idea how much Redbox is, but isn't Netflix $9.99/month? that would leave $390.1 in the digital budget. what in the actual f.
Sounds like they are ala carte renting or buying lots of content.

I own two vehicles. My S.O. has another of her own. Use your money for what you want/need to use it for and don't worry about it.

Re: The shoe problem

Lightweight hiking shoes are pretty durable, but not resolable as far as I know. Not cheap, but you can find them on sale. I have a pair of Merrills I like, but the breathable side vents are real close to the sole, so any kind of puddle invites water.

Re: Pet Ownership

I've outlived one dog and three cats. The dog and one of the cats were rescues. Another cat was a 'gift', and the final cat just showed up one day. They all lived into their teens, and I enjoyed having them. I haven't given any thought to getting another though.

Make a list of advantages as well. Lay it and the disadvantages out, see where they can cancel each other out, make a plan on the remainder, and get busy living.

I was thinking he just ran the numbers on how much money he would have saved if he was never born.

Re: Gaining the skills of other personality types?

I've learned how to be an extrovert when called for. It can be tiring, but I can do it. I'd say you can learn anything, but I'd also say not to get so caught up in your personality type so as to use it as a guide to living or worse as an excuse for not living. Humans seem extremely adaptable, and ad...

Done. Thanks again. I'll keep the manual and case and give the calculator to my office mate who 'borrows' mine for weeks at a time until I come looking for it.
