The Fourth Economy by Ron Davison is a great read. Self published, like Jacobs book. The writing style is somewhat academic.
Basically the book tells the story of how the (western) world developed in terms of economics, going from an agricultural economy, through the Renaissance, the nation state and the industrial economy to an economy limited by capital. Then the book becomes more speculative about lifting the limit of capital in the knowledge economy and going to an entrepreneurial economy.

It's quite interesting to contrast the book with Jacobs thinking. Jacob talks about the Renaissance Man, whereas Ron talks about Pragmatists.
