Tailoring cargo shorts to shorter, pocketless shorts?

Instead of buying new shorts, maybe I can cut out the pockets, cut the length a few inches, and hem the ends.

What's the worst that can happen :D?

Some cargo shorts are so long they would probably make decent shorts sans pockets. They're not all the same though.
