I think it's a great idea to amass sufficient wealth for the objective of using it to improve the world. However, the temptations to increase spending are high! Live simply like a Warren Buffet, keep the costs down & fly economy class always.

The easiest ways to obtain leverage is by using margin account and LOC, or HELOC. No hassle.

I think you will do well and love that you have such a solidified plan so early in life! My personal tastes would lean towards advice you have already received as I would never sign up for the hassle of a role that would leave me having to answer to multiple potential investors...I would take the simple business relationship of a broker any day instead, but to each his own.
