Thanks @J_, this is something I follow--small investment solar. I believe there is a professor who rigged his backpack with a small panel to charge his phone; just an example of creative use of existing tech.

There is also a solar film (by 3M I believe) due out for commercial use this year. The film goes over the glass, less efficient than solar panels but also lower cost, so the ROI may be comparable to panels. However, it may be a while before it comes to residential applications.
Otherwise, most of the micro applications that I've seen use some sort of canopy, which can be a problem in apartments because most building bar external structures.
