@secretwealth, oh no, it's my favorite conversation! Have you read this new book by Catherine Hakim called Erotic Capital? (It's along the lines of Pierre Beuordeaux's ideas of social capital, if you're into that kind if thing). Anyways, it turns out there's a global male sex deficit and the patriarchy doesn't want us knowing we have something valuable. So they try to brainwash us into being ashamed of actually valuing sexuality by saying it's too valuable for money or something? True story. Or, to summarize and quote what a wise stripper said to me when I was young, "these lawyers an shit had to go to school for ten years to make half the money we do in twice the time, of course they're mad."

Yeah, I'd agree 100% with this statement. The fact of the matter is, when it comes to sex, women's bodies are more in demand than men's bodies, and that premium can be translated into cash by entrepreneurial, independent women who aren't easily brainwashed by social pressures put in place by agrarian societies trying to maintain a patriarchal order. I think that's pretty damn obvious, and anyone who is willing to look at the matter dispassionately without the moral baggage of Christianity/Confucianism/Islam/Judaism/Buddhism/Hinduism (all of which deride prostitution and prostitutes), it's pretty clear that these women are just doing what we all do: trading in their time and skills for money.

My problem with these sort of arguments is the clash between my fundamentally libertarian social values (drug regulation therapeutic and recreational, prostitution, gay marriage, polygamy etc) with the necessarily arbitrary distinction between adult and child. Should a 9 year old be able to purchase drugs? Obviously not. Is a parent who purchases drugs and fails to keep them away from their children abusing them, absolutely. When do we stop being children? 16? 18? 20? 21? Some kind of maturity trial? And we haven't even got started on poverty being a type of coercion...

Prostitution is illegal... but acting in porn isn't. Think about that one for a minute.
Brought to you by the U.S. government and Judeo-Christian shame.

"with the necessarily arbitrary distinction between adult and child."
It's not arbitrary, nor is it necessarily arbitrary. There is a pretty clear distinction between a 9 year old and an 18 year old.
There might be shades of gray between the extremes, but that doesn't negate the existence of a differential between the extremes. An analogy: the distinction between scalding water and cold water isn't arbitrary. Although we might disagree on whether 100 degree F water is hot or not, it's undeniable that 400 degree F water is dangerously hot.

@anomander, I don't really follow your logic. I mean, I don't think 9 year olds should be running the deep fryer at McDonald's, but I know that outlawing fast food would just make it harder for the labor department to keep up with these things and impossible for customers or employees to report violations.

In November I:
Made $2300 from my regular gigs that all y'all would approve of.

Made $150 totally passively from hypnosis stuff.

Made $150 total from 3 or 4 different things that I don't usually count cause they're so small (I made $50 from sexypassiveincome.com)

Averaged $5/day in book sales, tho amazon doesn't pay out for 60 days.
Spent $160 on gas. Ran out of free and holy crap! More free is supposedly on the way tho.

Spent $101 on food, new used boots, and a couple things I'll hopefully be re-imbursed for.

Spent $27 on a good deed. :)
Cut two cords of wood with a bow saw (and we burned most of it!).

Leveled up in small engine repair.

Cooked thanksgiving for 30 people. Omg.

Leatherwork: another back-up back-up retirement plan? Would people buy this kinda thing? http://www.ecowhore.com/blog/wp-content ... 111249.jpg

http://www.ecowhore.com/blog/wp-content ... 111259.jpg

Wrote an article for a popular website that will hopefully help my book sales.

Thought about grad school again. Sigh.
And! Remember my Internet conundrum? The state has decided that everyone should have Internet! If you can't get DSL or dial up or whatever they'll pay for the satellite equipment and subsidize the bill! Ah, sometimes it's good to be an American. :)

$288 total spending? Man...I'm humbled. That's really amazing. You get the Alaska oil dividend, don't you? Isn't that about $100/mo., or 34% of your monthly spending?
I calculate 89% savigs rate--incredible.
Is that free internet a state thing or a nationwide thing?

I'm awed! Even if it wasn't hardwood, that's still a daunting task.
For those of you who have never seen a cord of wood, that's like 500+ cuts through a 1' log or about 4000 cuts through a 4"x4" timber.

I don't know much about this kind of thing, but I was recently looking at cases because I just bought a Tablet computer. It looks like the wonders of the internet have allowed for quite a few people or small companies selling cases - some of them similar to the one you made. Small electronics have taken off big time, and now that so many people use the internet, selling cases is very viable. So I'd say yes, that's a good back-up retirement plan. (as long as the shipping from Alaska isn't too pricey)
If you haven't already, search on Etsy or Zazzle for some combination of iPad/Kindle/Whatever and Case/cover/leather/etc.
There are also small businesses like www.portenzo.com, and www.dodocase.com

Thanks C40. Similar cases are going on etsy for around $80, but they have a more polished machine-ish look that I personally don't like as much but the average consumer might. Hard to say. I was thinking about making a cover for my journal and putting up some pics and a listing for custom covers on etsy, not that I really have time for yet another side business.
George, thanks! It's about 1-2 hrs of wood cutting (and chopping!) every morning.
secretwealth, last month I paid my bills ($80/m) ahead a few months, so if I hadn't done that it would be $370. Yep, I get the permanent fund dividend every October. It can be as much as $2k but lately more like $800 or $1200. I used to aspire to live just off that.
It's not free Internet, they just cover the equipment and installation (like $2k+ in my location) and subsidize the bill so you only pay $80 or $50 month. It's just for Alaska and just for off grid places where you can't get any other kind of Internet.

December:
2080 as wage slave

339 in semi-ERE income

About $230 in amazon money that I'll get in two months.
Applied for grad school program that I actually want to do!
You'd think I could have just lived off the 339, which I could have except that I checked my mail for the first time in months and found that I had a $300 credit card balance (woops) and I saved up my paypal money and ordered a crosscut saw for xmas. I would like to get some footie pajamas too. And a fancy tooled leather corset. Also these really nice $300 super warm boots. And a $2000 thermopile setup. I know we're supposed to not want anything for xmas, but when I read the xmas thread I wasn't as cool as y'all.
Also, I confess, I'm drinking a froo froo $5 coffee right now that I got to bribe myself into finishing my grad school app.
And it looks like I may never get significant amounts of free gas again, which will raise my expenses. :(
Anyways, 1700 saved out of 2400 = 70% = bad for me.

January:
1,816 working for the man

169 paid from amazon (600ish? earned that I'll be paid in 2 months)

64 from video sales which is so passive cause I haven't done anything since like august

70 from a side biz

0 working for the cosmic whore goddess. life is so boring lately.
Spent $410 total. I chipped in a little more than usual for the expenses of my shared living situation, which I didn't have to do and maybe I won't do any more. Also I bought way too many fancy coffees. I think I've identified that fancy coffee with steamed milk actually makes me sleepy, so hopefully that'll nip that in the bud. Also I think about $100 was business supplies.
410/2119 = 80.6% savings. That's better.
ALSO this month everyone I take care of almost died! Maybe they all will soon! Then I'll really miss that $2k/month and some beautiful old people. And maybe I'll go on an epic hike or bike ride.
Also towards the end of the month I created an Etsy listing for my kindle/etc covers - https://www.etsy.com/listing/122281147/ ... r-for-your and I've already sold two! (February income).
I hired a professional editor and have almost finished my second book.
I made some new contacts and might be teaching some classes for a neat place. It should be rewarding, though not so much financially.
Out of the blue someone called me and tried to recruit me for a job that's so far from anything I'd ever do I got really confused and thought it might be a weird Message From The Universe, so I went to meet them and then ditched them really quick.
I still don't know if I'm starting grad school in May or not. I still have to do my taxes so I can do my FASFA and my IBR update.
I got a collection notice for my ss# and a name that hasn't been legally mine in 7 years for a medical thingy in a city I've never lived in. I should just call them, right? What do I say? Or do I call the credit agencies?

You can file the FAFSA before you do your taxes. You just use "estimated" numbers. I always filed January 2nd before I had anything together. You can always go back to the college and correct them later. Financial aid is given out first come first served so I would encourage you to file sooner rather than later, even before your taxes.
Sounds like you might be a victim of identity theft...

What do you do about heating? $410/mo. seems incredible in an Alaskan winter.

secretwealth I cut a lot of wood. About a cord a month where I am now (it was more like a cord and a half a winter at my place) with a crosscut saw. It keeps me in good shape and it's great for my mental health too.
(Funny story about being "in shape" - the other day my dog took off after a moose. He's old, but he's still a husky type fast dog, and he had a head start. I ran him down, caught him, and carried him (50-ish lbs) back to the cabin. I was like, "damn I'm tough!" My elder was like, "you're all out of breath! You're in horrible shape!" He used to run about 30 miles a day to check his traps, it took him like 14 hours.)

I saw something on 60 Minutes the other day about how hard it can be to get the credit reporting companies to remove incorrect things. I'd start by contacting the company you got the bill from. It might be a good idea to check your credit report now.
Sometimes companies just screw up and move past-due bill amounts to the wrong people. (An electric company once added $200 to my bill that some other guy with the same first and last name owed them).
