Does anyone have any favorite books about home repair? For those of us who aren't planning on going into the trades, it would be nice to have a one-volume guide to fixing common and not-too-difficult electrical, plumbing, and carpentry problems.
Someone on this forum did recommend a book called Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House, but that's more about housekeeping than repairs.
Best home repair books?
The one I use is Home Repair from Black & Decker: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7939 ... ome_Repair.
(I believe there is a newer edition.)
This book has saved me hundreds of dollars because the illustrations are so clear that I have been able to put in a new toilet, do my own electrical work, fixed leaky faucets, etc. The book is fairly heavy and thick with great photos and explanations. Highly recommended for first time homeowners.

When I don't know how to perform a home repair, I usually look up the "Bricofiches" published by the Brico DIY franchise. (sorry, not available in English)
French: http://www.brico.be/wabs/fr/bricofiches/index.do
Dutch: http://www.brico.be/wabs/nl/bricofiches/index.do
There must be something better out there, but they're free, short and easy to understand.

A second for the Home Depot book. Also, for those who could use some in-person instruction, Home Depot offers free classes at local stores on a variety of topics:

Some are useful, others are sales pitches for a particular product. However, it is best to confirm the internet schedule with store personnel!
