Mad World by Gary Jules.
Before I came across ERE and YMOYL I was in a very dark place, highly successful in my career, lots of money in my accounts, and confused/unhappy with life. Listening to Mad World was a description of my sorrow and made me cry on multiple occasions. ERE and YMORL were the answers to my sorrows.

+1 for Mad World. Thanks for sharing that, tjt.
Also, I swear I don't listen to All American Rejects regularly, but I heard this on the radio it reminded me of ERE:

I guess he's talking about his rockstar lifestyle vs. his ex-girlfriend's "9-5 pace".

Since I got a late start at 33, mine would be Iron Maiden's "Wasted Years."
So understand,

Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years,

Face up, make your stand,

And realize you're living in the golden years
(Scream for me, ERE forum!!!)

Dog and His Master by Marcy Playground
Hey little boy see the Johnny and Janes

Hey little boy see them all go insane

Look and see Spot run

'Cause he pissed in their hallway

Run Spot run

Run away from it all

And I say you can be any way that you wanna be

How I'll be, that's up to me
Hey little girl see them all run around

Hey little girl see them all tumble down

Johnny will boss

Janey will buy

Spot will beg

But everyone dies

As I said you can be any way that you wanna be

How I'll be, that's up to me
One little, two little, three little idiots

Four little, five little, six little idiots

Seven little, eight little, nine little idiots

All in suit and tie

One little, two little, three little idiots

Four little, five little, six little idiots

All dressed up to die, and I say

You can be any way that you wanna be

But how I'll be, that's up to me
The Mexican Fisherman tune

The Life by Kenney Chesney
It was early one mornin’

Playa del Carmen

That’s when I first met Jose

He had a 12 foot Schooner

A 3 foot cooler

Full of the catch of the day

And he was wrinkled from grinnin’

From all of the sun he had been in

He was barefoot, cerveza in hand

He said “Gracias senor”, when I paid him too much for

All of the Snapper he had

Now I told him my friend it ain’t nothin’

In the best broken Spanish I knew

I said I make a good livin’

Back home where I’m from

He smiled and said Amigo me too
(Chorus)

He said I fish and I play my guitar

I laugh at the bar with my friends

I go home to my wife

I pray every night

I can do it all over again
Verse 2

Somewhere over Texas

I thought of my Lexus

And all the stuff I work so hard for

And all the things that I’ve gathered

From climbing that ladder

Didn’t make much sense anymore

They say my nest egg ain’t ready to hatch yet

They keep holding my feet to the fire

They call it paying the price

So that one day in life

I’ll have what I need to retire
(Chorus)

And just fish

And play my guitar

And laugh at the bar with my friends

And go home to my wife

And pray every night

I can do it all over again
And to think that I thought for a while there that I had it made

When the truth is I’m really just dying

To live like Jose
And just fish

Play my guitar

Laugh at the bar with my friends

Go home to my wife

Pray every night

I can do it all over again
Wouldn’t that be the life?

Wouldn’t that be the life?

Levon wears his war wound like a crown

He calls his child Jesus

`Cause he likes the name

And he sends him to the finest school in town
Levon, Levon likes his money

He makes a lot they say

Spends his days counting

In a garage by the motorway
He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas day

When the New York Times said God is dead

And the war's begun

Alvin Tostig has a son today
And he shall be Levon

And he shall be a good man

And he shall be Levon

In tradition with the family plan

And he shall be Levon

And he shall be a good man

He shall be Levon
Levon sells cartoon balloons in town

His family business thrives

Jesus blows up balloons all day

Sits on the porch swing watching them fly
And Jesus, he wants to go to Venus

Leaving Levon far behind

Take a balloon and go sailing

While Levon, Levon slowly dies

Jackson Browne - The Pretender
I'm going to rent myself a house

In the shade of the freeway

Gonna pack my lunch in the morning

And go to work each day

And when the evening rolls around

I'll go on home and lay my body down

And when the morning light comes streaming in

I'll get up and do it again

Amen.

Say it again

Amen.
I want to know what became of the changes

We waited for love to bring

Were they only the fitful dreams

Of some greater awakening?

I've been aware of the time going by

They say in the end it's the wink of an eye

When the morning light comes streaming in

You'll get up and do it again

Amen.
Caught between the longing for love

And the struggle for the legal tender

Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring

And the junk man pounds his fender.

Where the veterans dream of the fight

Fast asleep at the traffic light

And the children solemnly wait

For the ice cream vendor

Out into the cool of the evening

Strolls the Pretender

He knows that all his hopes and dreams

Begin and end there
Ah the laughter of the lovers

As they run through the night

Leaving nothing for the others

But to choose off and fight

And tear at the world with all their might

While the ships bearing their dreams

Sail out of sight
I'm gonna find myself a girl

Who can show me what laughter means

And we'll fill in the missing colors

In each other's paint-by-number dreams

And then we'll put our dark glasses on

And we'll make love until our strength is gone

And when the morning light comes streaming in

We'll get up and do it again

Get it up again
I'm gonna be a happy idiot

And struggle for the legal tender

Where the ads take aim and lay their claim

To the heart and the soul of the spender

And believe in whatever may lie

In those things that money can buy

where true love could have been a contender

Are you there?

Say a prayer for the Pretender.

Who started out so young and strong

Only to surrender.
Say a prayer for the pretender

Are you there for the pretender?

Say a prayer for the pretender

Are you there for the pretender?

Are you prepared for the pretender?

Peter Gabriel -- Solsbury Hill:
"To keepin' silence I resigned

My friends would think I was a nut

Turning water into wine

Open doors would soon be shut"
and
"Today I don't need a replacement

I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant

My heart going boom boom boom

"Hey" I said "You can keep my things,

they've come to take me home."

Cage The Elephant - Tiny Little Robots
This fits ERE perfectly:
They’ve got you movin’ to the city

Oh my, you think you're lookin’ pretty

But they’ve got their pistols too

Tucked down beneath their shoe

It’s a new sensation

World annihilation

Moving to the music

Patiently it’s waitin’

The city’s screamin’

I can hear them breathin’

Cryin’ out for wisdom

Hungry minds are feedin’
I know that you're tired of this

Cause you're a robot

They designed your life

But true souls said you know what’s right

And you can join us on the other side
Are you scared? Are you scared? Are you scared?
They’ve got you marching to a drum beat

Oh my you got another nose bleed

They’ll keep you so amused

You’ll never taste the truth

It’s a new creation

Total domination

Chains across your shoulders

Social captivation

Kill our leaders

Persecute our teachers

Criticize our culture

Crucify free thinkers
I know that you're tired of this

Cause you're a robot

They designed your life

But true souls said you know what’s right

And you can join us on the other side
Are you scared? Are you scared? Are you scared?
Fill our eyes with money

Vanity that’s cunnin’

Only on the surface

Diamonds look so stunnin’

Mass deception

Altered our perception

Sold it to the children

Made a new connection
I know that you're tired of this

Cause you're a robot

They designed your life

But true souls said you know what’s right

And you can join us on the other side

@Spartan--That song was great live. The meaning comes through more clearly without all of the production of a recording.

"Ride My See-Saw" by the Moody Blues. The singer invites the listener to take his seat, his number in the race, for free:
I worked like a slave for years,

Sweat so hard just to end my fears.

Not to end my life a poor man,

But by now, I know I should have run.

From my commute playlist- Boston Peace of Mind
Peace Of Mind lyrics
Now if your feelin' kinda low 'bout the dues

you've been payin'

Future's comin' much too slow

And you wanna run but somehow you keep on stayin'

Can't decide on which way to go
CHORUS

I understand about indecision

But I don't care if I get behind

People living in competition

All I want is to have my peace of mind
Now you're climbing to the top of the company ladder

Hope it doesn't take too long

Can't you see there'll come a day when it won't matter

Come a day when you'll be gone
CHORUS

Take a look ahead

Take a look ahead

Yea,yea,yea, yea
Well everybody's got advice they just

keep on givin'

Dosen't mean to much to me

Lots of people have to make believe

they're livin'

Can't decide who they should be
CHORUS
Take a look ahead

Take a look ahead

Yea,yea,yea, yea
Look ahead!
Tom Scholz was an engineer before he started Boston. This song was supposed to be about his life before rock stardom.

Aussie, I put it on every time I'm getting frustrated when I've got to do something new or uncomfortable. It puts me in the right frame of mind.

You'll Never Walk Alone -
When you walk through a storm

Hold your head up high

And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm

Is a golden day

And the sweet silver song of the lark
Walk on through the wind

Walk on through the rain

Tho your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on... walk on...with hope in your heart

And you'll nev-er walk alone

You'll nev-er walk alone
and
another vote for ....Mad World
- play these both on my piano - so guess am kinda biased - but they are super songs - uplifting songs - pragmatic and reality songs - to me, anyway
