Re: 2020

Post by Nomad »

It became a new year and I was thinking, I probably don't need to robotically record my numbers each month. They are looking ok for my needs for a long while, so I should focus on other more tangible matters.

Fitness
I had gained some weight gradually without really noticing it and on New Year's day, I weighed myself and was disappointed to see I was 200lbs with puts me in the middle of the overweight category, I'm 5'11. I'm going at my weight and lack of muscles from different angles. My diet was pretty good but I was drinking too many carbs and ended up in a calorie surplus. Also, I was doing zero exercise - with entirely predictable results. So, I've joined a gym for a fixed period starting on the 12th Jan and ending on the 30th of April. This is my main focus, getting up in the morning straight into my gym clothes and then going there for either strength or cardio stuff each day. So far, I'm down to 189 lbs even though I've gained some strength. I'm pleased so far and I'm looking forward to seeing where I can get to.

Mental Health
I haven't been feeling energised or enthusiastic about pretty much anything in a long while and I don't know if this is depression or something else. I'm hoping the exercise will help. Also though, I've been looking at podcasts about related stuff, and the phrase 'dopamine detox' popped up. I am pretty much an IT, internet, and content junkie so maybe I need to try and unplug for a while like some kind of monk...

Work
I'm pondering going back to work in IT for a while for the sweet, sweet cash but I can't bring myself to do it at the moment...

Travel
I have vague plans of getting to sunnier places. On my list are Portugal, Spain, and spots in South East Asia.

Music
Despite having a lot of music written and a pretty well-equipped home studio, I haven't managed to get motivated enough to actually make good recordings of any of my recent stuff. This state of affairs is in of itself quite a downer.

Dating
I am having the very common problem of finding a partner in the 21st century. I think it would be good to solve this problem before I travel because traveling as a couple should be more fun than going alone.

Well, that was quite depressing - do you just want the numbers?

Oh, you do, huh.

Maybe, maybe not, I'm not trying to poke fun. I suppose it depends on personality. It occurred to me that if traveling, having new experiences, and being in sunnier climes will do your mood and enjoyment of life a lot of good, it might be best not to delay or set up pre-conditions. Because that's one extra box you're prospective partner will have to tick, right?

One approach might be to get going now, begin reaping the benefits of travel, and if you do like travel, one of the best ways to find someone who likes to travel is to find other travelers while traveling. If finding other like-minded folks is a priority, you can easily optimize your travel strategy to find these sorts of people, who tend to be easy going and open minded and up for adventure and uncertainty.

Cool update. Much more interesting than just numbers.

Sometimes I feel like my own expectations of myself prevent me from having fun. Like when I want a project or craft to go really well, I don't want to start it until I'm in the right "mood" for it. Well, mood often comes while doing, so if I frame it as "I'm just going to fool around for a couple of hours", sometimes that breaks the mental barrier.

Well; I went back to work in April.

Fitness
I haven't renewed my gym membership since I rejoined work and I haven't been feeling great. I've decided to not drink alcohol for a while - as of the last couple of weeks - and see if my overall feeling of health improves. I managed to keep the weight out that I lost when I was in the gym, which atleast is something - so about 185lbs and 5'11.

Music
I have actually started doing a lot of music again. I've souped up my home studio a little more and I've done quite a bit of songwriting and recording.
Lot's of ideas at the moment.

Mental Health
I've been feeling a bit washed out and tired. I did have tests done and I've had low iron and vitamin D etc. Trying to improve my diet and have supplements and see if this improves.

Work
I am back at work but essentially working from home. The money is most welcome. I'm thinking I could do up to another year.

Travel
My vague plans for travel are on hold while I'm back in work, I will come back to this after my latest spell in work comes to an end.

Dating
I've given up on the online dating thing.

Today's' numbers. I think we need those once in a while. Comparison to end of 2022 in parentheses.

Pensions
(a) £45000 (+1475)
(b) £78406 (-154)

I have a new retirement timeline. I'm getting quite well rewarded in work at the moment and I'm going to try and keep motivated for another year. I didn't want to retire before the fabled stock market crash but the market doesn't seem to have received the memo.
