More interesting than 'useful' but I'm enjoying it (about 3/4 through). If you know a lot about US history it will be much repeat, but it's a interesting view on the tensions between patriotism, frugality and consumerism. I have especially enjoyed the chapter on cultural stereotypes of Jewish and Chinese immigrants in the 19th century.
