$45k is "house money"... that is, you can buy as large of motorhome as you want for that kind of cash and it could easily have the same range/capabilities as a 4Runner. And if you're handy with a welder & grinder, well, you can fasten all sorts of add-ons.

Sorry if I'm off about the truck, it sounded like a decent value based on a guesstimation. 4runners and off-roading accessories tend to be expensive. 4runners tend to keep up (relatively!) well in depreciation.George the original one wrote:$45k is "house money"... that is, you can buy as large of motorhome as you want for that kind of cash and it could easily have the same range/capabilities as a 4Runner. If your net worth is such your vehicle and home are <10% of your net-worth, I don't think it's unreasonable to own a middle-class level home or vehicle.

Uh oh. Sounds like someone's thinking of trading in the old rattletrap van for the ADVENTURE WAGON!!!!!
Those rooftop tents are hugely popular in Southern Africa. This time last year we were in Kruger's Skukuza camp and we squeezed in next to a couple who had just built up their Land Cruiser in Joburg with an EeziAwn tent. They were testing it out and allowed me to poke around. Those things are really cool. Not that you need any more prodding.
Not the same one but similar setup...

I scrolled through the build thread.... holy cow. He put a lot of time, effort, thought and money into that vehicle. Pretty spectacular as expedition vehicles go. Parts available everywhere. Super reliable.

Re: EDC porn
In terms of EDC, I think the philosophy is mostly one of that "it's better to have and not need than to need and not have". Most of the EDC stuff is intended to be stuff that's hard/impossible to improvise when you really--really need it.Crazylemon wrote:How much EDC do people actually use?
Of the typical EDC stuff, 95% of my use is a pair of small scissors and a small flash light which I have on my keychain. 4% of my use would be lozenges and hydrocortisone lotion. Only 1% would be typical EDC stuff.
Lately, I've become more interested in the kind of EDC that would allow me to MacGyver various DIY fixes i.e. a small toolbox akin to an expanded version of the Swiss army knife, so I no longer have to say "I'll bring some stuff next time I'm around" or "Do you happen to own a clamp and stapler". I still haven't quite figured out what the contents of such a kit should be.
Re: EDC porn
@Jacob - maybe a miniature atomizer of petrol in case you come across any killer ants?
I found this book by a former British military type to be very informative on the subject of survival kits and EDC (no hidden motive for recommending it, I was lucky enough to pick up a free copy for review purposes)
He looks at improvising solutions (mainly focused on snares, breaking locks and providing shelter) and rates some of the 'Swiss card' type products as useful for the sort of thing you may have in mind Jacob.

I carry around a Gerber multi-tool. It actually does have a little scissors in it, though I always forget about them.

That body looks really nice! Usually the only old Toyotas I see are totally rusted.

Re: EDC porn
I'm increasingly wondering whether the optimal EDC carry is not 20 feet of rope. See some of the old Delta Force movies where they're all carrying around a few loops of white rope on their black uniforms. I think they were onto something!

I made and wear one of these. Only 7' of 550 para cord but it is useful in a pinch.

Re: EDC porn
We bought a new car (new to us) and I'll be taking a couple longer road trips, so I'm reworking my EDC for my cars. I always have my altoid tin, and all of the cars have emergency kits. I also have get home bags in the cars with clothes, blankets, food and water. This kit is a tool-ish kit to complement those. I also have a medical kit, and I'm considering getting one of those flashlights with the siren for each car.
I like these videos, even though I think I could get more into those bags. I'm sure I can get more into those bags. I'll post pics of my kits when I'm done. (note--If you do a bag like this, you should include a list of the contents in an easily accessible place.)

I made a mini kit like this one. I like it, but I consider it a personal EDC and not big enough to be suitable for the car.
I'm looking for a crow bar type tool that would fit in the bag. All I can find are mini crow bars that aren't strong enough to get the job done, and the 12" crow bars that won't fit in the bag. Am I missing something? or should I just figure out how to attach the 12" crow bar to the bag?

Re: EDC porn
A cheater bar is good for extending tools. Not sure about a crowbar, especially not one that's flat all the way through.

Yeah, I can't figure out a cheater bar for a flat crow bar, unless I talked someone into flattening one end of a pipe of some sort. A cheater bar that held round things on one end and flat ones on the other would be perfect, especially if it had that loop thing to attach a wrench too. Bonus points if the round end fit into a small hammer head so I didn't have to carry a handle.

Crooks have been griping about the crow bar problem since the dawn of crookery.jennypenny wrote: I'm looking for a crow bar type tool that would fit in the bag. A flat pry-bar might fit in the corner of a bag. But you'll like a wrecking bar better....

LOL ... it's hard not to look guilty when you're holding a crow bar. And I'm usually bloody when I'm working, which only makes me look doubly guilty.

OK, that was funny. It reminds me of a quote from Iggy Pop that I repeat to myself when I'm working on stuff: "I bleed a lot." He was talking about writhing around on stage over broken glass, but it applies to my mechanic work too.

Re: EDC porn
Ha. That video is backwards. We bleed because we're focused on what we're doing and don't pay attention to the pain.
