Article on Devices Millenials Can't Live Without is Epitome of Non-ERE

I remember chuckling at the part of the ERE book where Jacob made fun of people who used things like automatic egg cookers. It looks like the revised edition will have a lot of new material to work with. The cherry pitting machine and the water bottle splash guard were especially funny to me. "I can't stop spilling on myself when I use my water bottle. I will NOT learn to get better at pouring fluids into my mouth. I will go buy a plastic solution from China."

What a horrifying read.
Thank... you... for that? :)

A cherry pitter would be handy if you are processing cherries for storing. We have 5 trees, and 2 produce a lot of cherries now.

We also own that Ov Glove. I'm not sure where we got it, I know we didn't buy it. Like 95% of what we own, we inherited it somehow.

I'm completely confused by that Google Cardboard thingy....

Absolutely. If any of you regularly drive and use your phone for navigation, you should absolutely get a mount. It makes things way safer, mainly because you can mount the phone closer to your normal field of vision and you take your eyes off the road much much less. But also, with the phone mounted, you're probably less likely to do any other messing around with the phone (With the phone mounted, when I get texts while driving, I'm more likely to wait until I'm stopped to read them.

It looks like I was too harsh. Upon further review, there are more than a few things on the list I'd use if they were gifted to me. I think I just sort of blacked out from confusion when I saw that water bottle guard and decided to post the link.

+1 to being perplexed by the Google Carboard device.

+1 Some of thing I would imagine using myself if I did those activities (like the tuner). And yeah the Google Cardboard Device. I have no idea what that is about.

+1 to phone mount (if we did not have one that came with our GPS we'd need one)
+ 1 the reusable shopping bag (but ideally you get one of those free with some advertising on it instead of paying £8.60!)
-1 Google cardboard (which we got for free). Have failed to use it as even our DS does not use VR (I think we would need MUCH more expensive phones than our household currently supports).

We bought the remote temperature reading device in order to try and track the cold spots in this house. There are fewer cold spots as a result so it may have been worth the money. It certainly helped us prioritise what to deal with first.

I guess that the ERE crowd would either get these items for less, DIY them, or find a more frugal way to use them?

+1 ^.

Reusable bag? Got from my family as no one used it.
Phone Mount? Easily make a ghetto version with a paperclip, cardboard, and duct tape.
Heat Monitor? Buy used or see if the neighbors have one.

I find it interesting how the marketing of such do dads works. There's such a wide range of marketing techniques.

Some of these things are just make it, throw it out there and see if it sells. At the other extreme, are the think tank that research in a science fiction manner. They want to develop a product that people want before they even know they want it.

The key ingredient is having a large enough market with enough confusion between needs and wants?

Google cardboard is just a box that holds the phone screen close to your eyes, blocks out other light sources, and shows a slightly different image to each eye, creating a 3d effect.

I personally didn't find it any more immersive than a video game. Maybe it's a little easier to focus on.

A lot of these items make sense depending on frequency of need. If I ate hard boiled eggs every day, I might even buy the electric cooker.

Some are also intended for the disabled or elderly.

None of this is the stuff that will make or break a financial picture. I think of worrying about little stuff like this as chasing after the scraps.

Cardboard is a cheap (there are free templates out there where you can make your own from household stuff) way to try a dumbed down version of VR for people who have decent phones. There's stuff out there like Vive and Oculus that are considerably better.

While I would never call it essential, the Oculus is a pretty damn cool bit of kit. I'm going to use mine for more than just games and racing sims; think more like 3D design and modeling where you can enter the space and visualize the object in any environment prior to it having a physical presence. The type of thing that was only available to a very few people can now be done by your average monkey (i.e. yours truly) for a relatively small price. This is some next level shit, people.

@El Duderino:

So, I could walk through my 3-D landscape design for my garden? It would be really cool if I could see the seasons change and the years towards growth pass. Would also be super-super cool if I could walk through superimposed 3D design while still being able to see real landscape in the background. Would also be super-super-super cool if I could use combination of voice commands and gestures to edit the design. Like if I could make a sweep with my hand and say "Viola-Variety Sorbet Lemon Frost" and then the bed would fill to my command. Then the order for the seed would automatically be placed, my solar-powered soil-preparing robot would activate, and next thing you know, the virtual would become real!

As a GIS looking to go into planning; okay yeah now these makes sense. And actually I saw a presentation focusing on using that for examples of pedestrian based planning when I was at a GIS conference in Finland.

That would be lovely. My solar-powered prune-and-pinch robot could be programmed to nip every bloom that did not open properly at its due time until the bed was perfected through technologically-accelerated land-race breeding protocol. Maybe I will get around to that project after I build my solar vacuum tube dual refrigerant cycle steam turbine generator. It all looks so easy on paper (sigh.)

LOL at the smart skillet.

My personal favorite example of how Silicon Valley is out of touch with reality is the Juicero.

Just sayin.
