This morning I stopped by the swap meet after my class. One of my regular vendors had a box full of new Black Diamond and Petzl carabiners. I bought the whole box. He also had a box full of Patagonia Nano Puff jackets but he wanted too much for those. Down at the bottom of the box of carabiners was a new Petzl Reactix headlamp along with a special case that turns the lamp into a lantern. Apparently, it automatically adjusts to the level of light needed. It is USB rechargeable. I am going to give it a try.

Nice headlamp. I'm really getting sick of how mine eats AAA batteries.

I like the pen in particular but that's no surprise since I always like the miniature stuff. One of those phone cases with some cash, a CC, and my license tucked behind the phone is all I really need most of the time (and a knife holstered somewhere). It would be nice to get my basic carry down to essentially my phone and car keys with a couple of goodies clipped to the key chain.

EDC steel pin for my Wenger Swiss army knife.

I got a nasty splinter, actually several in my hand at the beach off a stair rail last weekend. My SO didn't want to go home so I had to sit there grossing her and her sister out while I tried to pick the splinters out with my nails. The Swiss Army Knife I had on me didn't have tweezers and even then, the last splinter was really in deep. So SO and her sister chatted away as I freaked over my hand.

I got home and decided I'd start carrying a knife that had tweezers. When I chose one, I noticed the toothpick was gone. The gears started turning. Why not put in a needle or pin instead of a toothpick? I really could use a sharp pin for EDC and it should be easy to carry. Victorinox knives have this but I prefer to carry the smaller Wenger knives that left out the pin. The do have this really silly toothpick. It is so flimsy I really wonder what they were thinking of when they designed it.

Image

So I made this with a T pin from my stationary drawer. Now I can dig out splinters with this tool stowed where the toothpick used to be.

Image

To make it I started with a T pin and cut the head off. I found a plastic buyer loyalty card from Chipotle that I don't use. I cut some material out of the card to make a handle.

Image

I heated the pin base with a lighter and imbedded into the plastic handle then reinforced it with a little superglue and baking soda.

Image

Now I have an EDC sharp pin in my pocket. Yeah, I could have figured out another way to carry it, but this is a tidy way in the knife handle. It's in the black knife below.

Fun fifteen minute project.

I carry the following on occasion (phone and keys on me at all times):
  1. a Gerber Suspension multi-plier: http://www.gerbergear.com/Multi-Tools/B ... r_22-41471. It came with a pouch which I put on my belt while hiking/camping/construction/computer assembly. It's been extremely useful.
  2. I carry a pocket size maglite flashlight if going offgrid: (https://www.amazon.com/Maglite-Incandes ... B00002N6SL
  3. A BIC multipurpose lighter and matches as backup when offgrid.
  4. A compass when offgrid: https://www.amazon.com/UST-20-310-455C- ... ds=compass

That's great. I too carry a Wenger (the scissor design is far superior to the Victorinox imo), and have found the toothpick useless.

I believe Victorinox now owns Wenger and they brand both knife lines as Victorinox now, but I have had mine for a good long time now.

I love the idea of carrying duct tape in a chapstick tube ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCbnId5sdjA

I used to carry produce bags in my altoids tins and bug out kits but I've switched them out for oven bags (like the kind used to cook stew or turkey). They work for carrying water but can also be heated to 400F so it's possible to use them for cooking as well as long as the bag didn't touch the fire or coals.

I love the hidden razor blade trick!

I use chapstick more often than duct tape. But the times I actually used my edc tape I didnt care what was happening to my lips.

Recently I got stuck in Hollywood (the ugly part) with a fuel line leak and used this to fix it. I carried it around a few years in the trunk. Stopped a little pinhole squirt of diesel.

A couple weeks ago I bought this 1950s makeup holder at the swap meet for a buck and have been slowly adding my makeup to it. 8-)

I scored the FIsher Space Pen along with a Cross pen and the lighter for $1. The lighter dries up after a few days so trash as soon as I replace it. I've had the mini ratchet for years and really like it. Fifty cents for the crescent wrench made by JH Williams, which is now Snap-On. Between the Leatherman's bit set and the torx set I have most common screws covered. Sockets are metric because bikes are metric. Leatherman's made the blade exchanger so they can accept certain Bosche jigsaw blades. I am keeping an eye out for a set like this.

Women are lucky they always have an emergency mask on them. Technically they have two, so make sure you've got a women with you when SHTF. :D

Hey,

I read this great article about the origins of the N95 mask. Great history. It reminded me of this post by @jp. Apparently the n95 came from a female engineer looking to make a bra.

Got envy about this consumer grade vest with many pockets. Thinking about DIY it. Currently, using safari vest, like classical retires over here. No style points. In the past, was called Inspector Gadget as I carried big backpack with me, haven't got original jacket. Thought about finding practical one (not for kids parties), realized it's not usable during summer (and I'm paranoid about loosing the items in the changing rooms).

So... any updates on your EDC sets?

http://ericlefou.1.online.fr/MES_TRUCS/ ... tional.htm is the Guiness Book world record holder. I don't think that outfit costs a lot of money. For the ultimate prepper backpack setup see https://www.amazon.com/Modern-Survival- ... 9870563457

Earlier this year, I was putting together an expanded EDC for a Scottevest Revolution jacket that I got supercheap on eBay ... but then weather got too warm to wear it. I'll revisit the idea in the fall.

My pants pocket EDC is wallet + Leatherman Squirt S4 (the one with the scissors) and a Photon III light on a keychain. I don't leave the house without it.

My standard "walking around" outfit is kinda expensive. GORUCK GR2 (I hemmed and hawed for half a decade and finally bought one a couple of years ago, no regrets! I paid $250 or something on eBay) and eventually added a 30lbs plate in the laptop compartment (much better than hauling dumbbells around because a plate sits higher on the back, also no regrets, way better for posture). The plate is mostly in order to slow me down to normal walking speed when walking with others although I suppose the bullet proof aspects around center mass don't hurt these days :-P

Also includes two umbrellas (I carry one for DW too, I'm the pack mule in this relationship). A ziploc bag of TSA-approved traveling toiletries. Headlight. It's basically at 50 milliFerfal of EDC.

The backpack seems like a lot of extra space for just a couple of umbrellas, a ziploc of toiletries and a headlamp, no? Why the decision to use a backpack and not use a large fanny pack instead? Are you adding more to the backpack later as well?
