NYC Meetup 10/18/14

Post by Pronoid »

Any interest in doing a NYC meetup here soon? I know there are at least a handful of us in the NYC area. Last meetup that I went to was over 6 months ago, I believe, so we are due for another.

My schedule is mostly flexible so I'll just randomly throw the date of Saturday 10/11/14 out there for starters. This can be changed.

After it looks like there is some interest, we can finalize the rest of the details.

Don't everyone all reply at once... It's funny because the NYC meetups on MMM have a similar reaction. Guess I need to move to Longmont :D

I'd go, depending on the weekend. I think I basically booked through mid-October, though (weekend of the 18/19 might work).

Here's the poll: http://doodle.com/z35ac86eni7pf8f8

Drop your name and available dates; and we'll see what works for most people.

Nice. So you guys want to shoot for Saturday 10/11/14? I guess the random date in my first post was spot on.

Yes, it looks like 10/11 is the winner.

So let's talk about location. Seems like an easy thing to do would be to use the same indoor public space we used last time. It's the perfect meetup spot, since it's easy to get to, it has tables and chairs, the weather doesn't matter, and it's not crowded.

BeyondtheWrap: So..... what else is wrong with that spot? (-:

For those who weren't there the last time, the spot was the Sony building

1 pm is good for me if it is good for everyone else.

If possible, I suggest editing the subject line of this thread to include the date of the meetup.

I can attend. 1pm works for me (I have to be somewhere at 5ish). Where's the address? Near Rockefeller Center?

Hey folks! The last NYC meetup I attended was in 2012! I have been M.I.A. for a while but I want to get together with you all soon. Unfortunately, I'll be out of town this weekend.

How about we schedule a monthly meetup? Who's interested?

I suspect that a monthly meetup may be too frequent, given the number of people who have participated in NYC (10 or 15 across all meetups?)

But, a regular meetup would be good. I'd be interested in a quarterly one or something.

Hey gordy,

According to the Doodle poll (link above), 10/18 also works for people. If you could make it then, maybe we'd move the date.

Hey Chris, 10/18 would work for me! What say ye, folks?

m741, you're right. A monthly get together might be a bit much OR it could provide some predictability, so we would always know that, say, the second Saturday of the month an ERE meetup is happening somewhere in the city. It's an idea.

I'm willing to have people over to my place now that I have a living room ;)

Not from NYC but will be in town for work on those dates. Flying out the 18th, so the earlier in the day the better. Might be interesting to meet some of you.

So, it looks like 10/18 might work?! :D

Where shall we meet? What shall we do? I don't know the protocol since I only attended one of these NYC meetups in the past. Do we want to have something planned (board games?) or leave it open.

I can do 10/18, though again I'll probably have to finish up by 5. I can bring a few small boardgames that I have (and maybe some cards). Do we know how many people to expect yet? I may pick up one of the party games I've been holding off on (such as Coup).

@gordy50, past meetup protocol has typically been not to have an activity planned. Despite being introverts, we usually have plenty to talk about. However, now that most of us already know each other, I recognize it may be time for a change. Additionally, having fun activities such as board games may be useful for encouraging attendance at this and future meetups. For this reason I approve of the board games suggestion.

I disagree with the suggestion of monthly meetups. I predict that making them too common would lead to poor attendance. Personally, as a historian of NYC ERE meetups, I would also find it difficult to remember what happened at each meetup if they happened so frequently as to blend together in my mind. By the way, gordy50, your last meetup was actually in 2011, not 2012.

I think quarterly would be regular enough to maintain our community while seldom enough to consider the meetups distinct, even special, events.

The meeting place we suggested earlier in the thread was 550 Madison Avenue, which is an ideal spot IMO.

gordy, were you suggesting holding this meetup in your living room or would you prefer to save that for a future meetup?

IWantLess, looks like the general consensus has deemed it necessary to change the date in the subject line again.
