Average age of members?

Post by Tom Young »

Having been a regular on many forums, over many years... I found that after a while you get to know the people who are most active... their likes, dislikes, the super-nice one who would never offend, and the aggravator, who knows everything, and is quick to correct or disagree. The cooler heads... the moderators... who watch to keep the forums friendly and watch out for the instigators and those with self serving interests.
All of this forum recognition takes a while, and especially when there are many active members, it takes a while to fit in.
So: That's the reason for the question. Obviously an impossibility to develop a statistic about age, but how about YOUR feeling about this. Would you guess a general age bracket? Or maybe several age brackets. How about a retired vs. not yet retired bracket?

Why the question? Well how about this? If the member is looking for current investment advice or experience, and is concerned with state of the art lifestyles: from living in a cave to living in a tiny house, to condos., or rural living... all of this has a "current" "this is good advice for me today"... then that is quite different from hearing about what someone did in the past and applying it to today.

Another way of putting this, is learning from the past, as a possible repeat in the future. Think of some of these situations, and whether they may be a cautionary tale for the future.

-War, as in Vietnam or WWII... the draft, government controls, rationing
-Inflation 8% or more
-Interest rates 12%
-Gas/energy shortages - gas station lines, sky high heating/cooling costs
-Unemployment... 20+% in the 1930's
-longer term recessions

... and some of the in-process changes...
-labor union changes
-pension changes
-the shift from bank CD's
-surging medical costs

In these cases, seeing the direction, and how to deal with them... understanding the "way it used to be".

So yes... there will be a wide range of ages but how about your guess, percentage wise?
30 to 40?
40 to 50?
50 to 60?
60 to 70?
+70?

According to this thread, which is > 3.5 years old, the average is 33 (Jacob's retirement age ;)). Median 32, min 15, max 66 with sample size 69 (including myself). 66% male:
http://earlyretirementextreme.com/forum ... 97fb6de568

0-19: 4.3% (67% male)
20-29: 31.9% (55% male)
30-39: 37.7% (81% male)
40-49: 20.3% (57% male)
50-59: 4.3% (67% male)
≥ 60: 1.4% (100% male, n=1)

I would have guessed early 30s, as the thread more or less indicates. I'm near the end of the bracket below that.

Retired vs not yet retired is a more interesting question I don't have a feel for. I'd guess the latter outweighs the former by perhaps a 2:1 ratio or more, but wouldn't be too surprised if I turned out to be wrong.

I'm 43, and I expect that to be in the oldest 20-30%.

I gauge member ages on forums by the generic how to questions and answers. Forums with older members have faster, more informed answers to "how would I..." questions not related to the forum.

This site, with a high INTJ ratio, has excellent quality of posts, in general, though.

From the fringes, I confess to 73 years of age.

I keep planning to write up a quick bio to share my path, but tomorrow never comes.

Maybe this will motivate me to share??

I hope it will. I'm 40, and I'm always looking for advice from people who have been there and done that. :D

Yes, most definitely. We need need more experienced perspectives.

The big 5-0 for me next month. I'm half dead, dammit! ;-)

Dragline, more than half actually. (Snarky smile.)

Age is just a number. For the types who cluster here, I'm sure age means zilch. We're far wiser than others our age in many respects, and far more childlike in others.

That's what's so cool about Jacob's little club.

I'm 48. I stopped working in December '11, although I work a lot more now than I ever did at any job. It's just under my own terms. I did try a real job last month which lasted all of two weeks.

I'm 28. About 1/3 FI here in my car-dependent mortgaged house in overpriced Maryland, tantalizingly close to FI if I changed my lifestyle/location, but not yet retired (though some would say I'm retired-in-place) from soulless government work. My original plan called for about 7 more years, but I now hope to get out in just a few more years before I completely transform into a dried up husk of my former self. In fact, the other day while doing research for my self-published fiction, I stumbled onto some erotica writer's poorly-labeled blog filled with NSFW images. Since then I've been daydreaming this scenario that my employers will find out about it, through the many layers of East German-esque surveillance, and fire me for "surfing porn" on a work computer. I imagine bursting into a grin at the news, thanking my boss profusely for freeing me, and babbling off plans to immediately sell my overpriced suburban house, move into an RV, and head to Colorado to live free as a bud trimmer/erotica writer/male gigolo/anything else.

But alas, so far, tis only a dream. Maybe next week. Fingers crossed!

...Does that answer your question?

I'm 45 and still working in retirement ala Jacob minus a 9-month try at not working. I've been FI since 26 y-o.

I'm 21 and I know that there are at least 4 on here who are younger than me.
