That was interesting -- I agree that demographic trends and trends toward inequality are very deflationary. This also helps answer there where are we going next query near the end of the Trump thread.

Howe was on AOM's podcast last month. The first half is the same old stuff (although always interesting), but the second half touched on some good topics including gender roles and some prognosticating.

I found the transcript but it was weird (scrolling) to read. Were there previous periods of reduced fertility? Just one of the things I noticed.

I've been reading and watching Howe, and have really enjoyed it! I definitely took some notes about the possible trends that might arise once my generation starts reaching adulthood. I'm curious, what sorts of trends do you guys see the millennial generation getting into in terms of housing, lifestyle and infrastructure? This also makes me realize that I should get out from under my rock and pay attention to what my generation is doing.

That being said, I tend to see my generation gearing more towards the mobile lifestyle. I say this meaning that we buy cheap but trendy clothing, live in apartments (and probably will for quite some time), our technology is centered around mobile devices and how technology is used in everything we do, we like competition that involves working as a team, and we like flashy things that create excitement.

Things that come to mind

- Short attention span, things need to happen fast
- Use of strong words/language/visuals
- Stuff comes ready-made from the factory, so no one knows how a cow sounds and feels, how to make fire or how to build/fix a bike unless you're a specialist
- More specialists, fewer generalists because increased complexity
- The belief that technology will solve most of the challenges in our world
- Declining social skills because of digital communication?
- Cultural/geographical diversity, we oftentimes show more sympathy for a fellow human on a different continent than our next door neighbour
- Climate change seems to be a serious issue among the millennials
- (Status from) social capital more important than (status from) financial capital?
- Increased diversity in relationships and sexuality (gay/bi couples, multiple partners, more in touch/sync with friends than family)
- More sharing of resources (because we have to?)

Have you read The Complacent Class? It's a fairly quick read if you haven't. I almost posted a review of it in the 'real Trump problem' thread.

No, but I've heard Cowen talk about it so much, I almost feel like I have. He had a podcast episode about it in March.

Millennials know that using appropriate language invites rather than restricts productive conversation.

Here is a new interview with Neil Howe. It's short -- he only answers three questions -- but the last one is interesting. He seems to be hedging more on the question of a civil war during this fourth turning.

I can agree with that.

Anecdotally, I know at least a few boomers who are giving everyone side-eye and waiting for the civil war. Don't know anyone younger who is actually into that though.
