I'm not a big fan of how this forum handles single topics that get so long that they span multiple pages.
My first choice solution would be for the posts per page to be dramatically increased, from where it is now (around 30?) to something astronomical like 1,000. I don't think this would really be a big deal considering average post length.
My second choice solution would be for the following CSS or similar to be added for this site:
.page-numbers { margin-left: 6px }
Which would turn 12Next> into 1 2 Next>
I don't care all that much though. Just enough to write this post, I guess.

Only one issue with the first solution. The post per page number also sets the number of topics on the homepage. If I set it to 1000, you'll get a very long homepage.

Haha, that's strange.
I would personally go for around 100 then. But I may or may not be addicted to information, and I learned long ago that group decisions should rarely be based upon my utility curve.

Even if those people are better off with decisions based on your utility curve than their own (poorly chosen) utility curve? :-P
