Robinhood Brokerage

Post by slowtraveler »

I've signed up for an account with Robinhood and I'm considering funding it. Anybody have any experience with it so far?

Pros:
Listed on SEC as having the 500k government insurance in case of brokerage failure.
Free domestic stock purchase and selling.
Beautiful interface.

Cons:
Support doesn't seem particularly skilled.
New.
No automatic dividend reinvestment.

They seem to make their money through margin accounts and international trading.

I like it an use it!
The limit orders can get wonky, but overall pretty damn good for free

I'm suspicious. Their target market seems to be noobs (free trading, nice interface) but their money-making product is targeted at experienced investors. The "freemium" model is pretty common, but jumping from free trades to trading on margin? I don't see the uptake. There's probably other ways they make money off of users (maybe front running).

Not saying that discount brokers aren't front running... but without a sustainable revenue stream, they might be more more apt to wring out extra pennies using less traditional methods. Once the VC money runs out at least.
