I discovered it's actually fun to supplement calisthenics with gear.
Maybe two 30 lb dumbbells or kettle bells and a jump rope or shoes one can run with? Barbell takes up a lot of space and machines are clearly out.
Most Bang for the buck/space at-home gym gear?

Careful! This is how [accumulation] begins ...
Re: Most Bang for the buck/space at-home gym gear?
One way to avoid accumulation is to set arbitrary limitations/minimizations. Thus you can be pleased with yourself by sticking to those.
So if you were to limit yourself to a _single_ gym gear.. off the top of my head I would probably say a kettlebell. Was considering recommending some indoor rowing machine, but those are in fact torture machines and it's somewhat rare for it to be utilized effectively (plus it's a bit expensive).
Maybe you could make a kettlebell out of sterling silver?

Today I managed to work out with a curl bar. I did curls (duh), overhead press, skull crushers and squats. The curl bar was the perfect size. Not too wide, but not too narrow. Just add more weight when needed and presto- you got at least four fantastic exercises with just one bar...instead of most gyms that have like 10 different bars for different curls

You might enjoy a weight vest. They are often floating around used on Craigslist. MIR makes a decent one.

+1 for kettlebells. jump rope also very efficient. if possible pull-up bar and gymnastic rings (efficient, but do require a place to hang them up). after that, barbell + weights..
Re: Most Bang for the buck/space at-home gym gear?
I use an overhang on my door as a pull-up bar; it works well enough. The gymnastic rings sound fun for all kinds of activities...
