It would be relatively easy to setup a small solar, and rain water collection system. Add to that a composting toilet and some gardening, chickens and some goats on a piece of land.
The only thing I don't like about it is that 1) the money put in doesn't really go up in value, but it's such a minimal amount that the benefit of it reducing living expenses drastically is worth the opportunity cost of a real house that appreciates, under most circumstances.
Or is it? It also comes at the opportunity cost of social acceptance. If you are a single guy, not a ton of quality women are going to want to come back to your 170 square foot cabin with a composting toilet...and I'm sure you would become the talk of friends.
Would you live in this cabin?
Re: Would you live in this cabin?
I'm considering this for one of my vacant lots in the city

... but, as you noted, I may encounter difficulties finding quality men willing to visit me there. Probably, I will just have to get a dog.

Yeah, I was just kidding. No way I'm spending that kind of money. Probably go more for something like this and throw down a few scavenged area rugs on top of some pallets and borrow one of my sister's dogs:

Re: Would you live in this cabin?
Here is something much nicer that the one I originally posted, and more traditional with a 3/4 bath. More expensive at 30K shipped, but not bad. Add the cost of maybe 20K land in the middle of nowhere, 5K concrete pad, 20K for a robust solar and rain catchment system. Composting toilet, garden and some livestock and you are good to go.
I think this model is big enough to require permits, which ups the cost, but might be worth to pay up lest the man come make life hard on you. If only there was a way around permitting restrictions. Maybe if I only use it as a storage shed...

The last I would not build in my area : the underground water level is almost at top soil level, which means you would basically build yourself a pretty large greenhouse pond.
On dry land, that would some dope shelter, though...

Most of the ikea pack houses are expensive it seems. They have a pretty good refuge shelter for 1k though it appears.
