Burpee competition

Post by jacob »

Okay, let's hear it!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burpee_%28exercise%29
Begin in a standing position.
Drop into a squat position with your hands on the ground. (count 1)
Kick your feet back, while keeping your arms extended. (count 2)
Immediately return your feet to the squat position. (count 3)
Jump up from the squat position (count 4)
NB: This is the no pushup version.

How many can you do in 1 minute?

(I happen to know my number from the Insanity fit test from about 2/3s in and it's 22 reps ... if you can do better, by Jove, I'll beat you! Because I'm not at all competitive. No, really! Just ask DW)

Ego, repicheep, DSKla, Jean, and theanimal, I'm calling you out ;-)

28. Think I could've maybe pushed a bit harder, though.

Edit: Form will obvs make a big difference here. In the interests of honesty, I was going for speed so jumps were erring on the side of half-arsed.

Since we finished hiking the trail Mrs. Ego has been doing 6 sets of 10 no-pushup burpees with a 1 minute rest between. In the last few days she's been trying to goad me into a burpee competition. Now this!? $heesh

Okay, okay....I'm in.

20. Absolutely gutted.

I filmed it to see my form. It was pretty bad. Hips were sagging in the plank and my back was rounded in the jump.

This was the best one I could muster. http://makeagif.com/UyiP5B

I think we've got to define proper technique if this s going to be a competition. :D

Some define a no pushup burpee as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPjoMaMxBvQ

I think of it more like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4Dio-FdqWg

This is EXACTLY what I needed.

Sure, I'm in.

But if you're doing this in air conditioning and/or it's less than 98 degrees outside, you're a cheater.

I'll also give it a try tomorrow. And reep, just do it in the morning when it's cooler! At least that'll be my tactic in this scorched earth called the Netherlands.

Burpees suck. I don't remember the exact number, but I only managed 63 or or so in the Crossfit Open three years ago in 6 minutes. But I'm an old guy with a trashed ac-joint. The other rub is they made us suspend a target 6 inches above the extent of our standing vertical reach and on the jump you had to get two hands on the target or it didn't count. That 6" sounds easy, but after a time ...

Never tried for max reps in a minute but I can almost guarantee I'd have been sub-20.

The Crossfit form rule was chest and knees must be on the floor at the bottom. Both hands on the target at the top. How you move from top to bottom is your business. Burpees were allegedly (according to an Oly coach I once had) invented for Olympic lifters with the goal being to power up from the prone position via the pushup into a squat and then use the squat as the basis for a jump. So it was about speed and agility into/out of squats. That it is a move that when repeated is an endurance nightmare was just a happy accident.

I had to do a 100 at a jiu-jitsu grading because I didn't wear my patches. I made about 80 in about 10 minutes (maybe more) and I was sore for 2 weeks. Never again.

I did 21!!!

Only thing is,

My old athletics coach made us do star jumps on the last phase so I guess i did a variation. I only lasted 50 seconds. My form was spot on but I felt my heart was going to explode.

I badly need to get fit again

After finishing my first attempt the other day, I did 2X15 TRX explosive jumps with the Rocky theme playing in my head.

I had intended to make another attempt today to pass Jacob's 22 but, ah, I'm having trouble getting up from a sitting position right now. :o We've got a long flight tomorrow so I'm gonna let my ass recover.

Don't think you've heard the last from me Drago.

Cold-starting helped: 29!

I'd give myself a B- or C for form. No straight arms (only have 8' ceilings which I sorta learned the hard way once :-P ) when jumping but elbows above head. Fell almost directly into the plank (counts 1 and 2 become one move), not pretty. Jumped maybe 2-3".

Hopefully my excuse was ready in case you'de beat me.
I just biked back from a city 500m lower and 20km away, where I drank unreasonable amounts of cheap beer, when I did my attempt.
Maybe I'll dare to try in an excuseless setting.

My burpee days are long past, for several reasons. But when I did them, I did a chest-to-deck (but no formal pushup, just get back up and jump) version. Believe my best minute was something like 27. I tried to keep my short efforts under 2.2 seconds per burpee, and my longer ones under 2.4 seconds per burpee (only got as far as 3 mins before my pace dropped).

Burpees can go to hell.
