Re: Forums Wishlist
In the RSS feed of the old forum, the poster's username would be at the beginning of each post header. Would it be possible to reintroduce that, to enable a quick scanning for a certain user's posts in an RSS reader?
Re: Forums Wishlist
wish:
for each forum post, hyperlink the poster's username with their "Find A Member" result (their user profile), so that we can see more information about the poster at a glance..
Example link:
memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=961
So my name 'anomie' at left would be hyperlinked to
memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1988

Re: Forums Wishlist
Hello, I fully realize that I don't have much of a say in the forum design, because, for one thing, I have haven't posted here very much (though I lurk very frequently and have found the forum really useful and interesting).
Also, I want to say that I really appreciate the efforts of bigato et al to make the forum fast again! That is a lot more important than the design, and it seems to have been quite successful and efficiently done.
With those caveats, I also agree with some others that it would be nicer, especially for new users, if the front page of the forums was a list of the most recent posts (like it used to be), rather than the top of a category tree (like it is now). Of course, one can click on "view active topics", but a new user might not realize this, and even for old users it is ever so slightly inconvenient/annoying.
As I recall from a previous post, the reason for the change was that it's just the default provided by the new phpBB forum software, and there was a desire not to make radical changes to the software, both to conserve effort and to facilitate future software upgrades. This is very reasonable.
So, here is a suggestion for a super-hacky, but extremely easy (and probably fine), way to get the old front page back, which should have a minimal impact on future upgrades. Replace index.php with something like the following:
<?php
$_GET["search_id"] = "active_topics";
include "search.php";
?>
If desired, an additional step could be to move the original index.php to something like categories.php, and add a link to /categories.php at the top of the page with the text "View top-level categories" or whatever, but I'm not sure how that would affect upgrades, and I don't personally think it is necessary.

Digging the new fancy-font forum banner.
Re: Forums Wishlist
Did not notice that "profile" button at the bottom of each post! Thank you for pointing it out. So many features on this site!

In 2013, a crack commando unit was sent to wage slavery by a retarded system for a crime they didn't commit. They proptly escaped from a highly-paid maximum benefit job to live underground. Today, still wanted by employers, they survive as rentiers on fortune. If you have a problem, if no-one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire - the ERE FORUMS.

Re: Forums Wishlist
It's ok for me right now.
I would ditch all avatars and images. But i know some people like them, so no problems for me.

Re: Forums Wishlist
So, uh...why aren't "those" and "fast" capitalized on the new banner?
Re: Forums Wishlist
I think this forum needs a new section for employment & education (hacking employment, getting better jobs, professional skill development).
Good for help on job advancement, payment negotiation, freelance gigs, side businesses perhaps, etc.
The new section should be placed high up on the list, perhaps right after Lifestyle Questions.

Re: Forums Wishlist
That's a great idea. I also think we should do this! It would probably speed up the path to FI for most of us.

Re: Forums Wishlist
I'm not so sure a new section would be useful--we can easily start threads on employment and education in the money questions and lifestyle questions sections.
I think most people use the "view active" and "view new posts", and since there isn't really that much content on this forum anyway, I'd say we need less sections, not more.
That being said, I think more posts on education and employment would be pretty good.

Re: Forums Wishlist
It was a side note I made in a thread about MOOCs. I think we could definitely use more posts about education and employment. People are focused on being done but most people here are probably still working. It's important to make that part of things helpful.

Re: Forums Wishlist
It's likely because the jacob on the old threads don't have the same userid as the new ones I'm creating [because the id wasn't transferred during the migration].
