Unsurprisingly, I found this quite inspirational.
I'm sure many here will too: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/201 ... gavin.html
Now let's just see how long it takes for the conversation to turn to libertarians freeing us from the yoke of government.

The original speech in full. It has some lines that are just amazing. I grew up 2 towns over from Bill Watterson's town while C&H was at its height. He's a low-key, fairly reclusive guy who was constantly being pursued for interviews by the local press, but just didn't want the attention.
My kids love C&H and so it goes on.

There is financial and career success and there is success in living a happy life. If you focus on the former at the expense of the latter, you lose.
I am curious, though, how this relates to your other post, Money is Power. Doesn't he say that you should do what you love and not go for money? Did you not criticize this?
My thinking is that a cash reserve helps a lot to make the good choices he is talking about in the comic. It does give you the power to say no to a nonsensical life to which you would otherwise be bound. The money is a tool towards an end.
The irony behind all this is that most people do neither. They don't do what they love and they don't build a cash reserve to be free. Instead they are wage slaves hunting empty displays of wealth.
So this question probably only affects people on this forum.

Great question, Felix. I think this statement of yours sums up the paradox this and my other post are targeting:
I'd say Watterson's advice is great and inspirational, but he glosses over one important point: a job title and a salary aren't the sole measure of human worth, but a large stash of money gives people the power to abandon job titles and salaries.
One of the things in Jacob's book that was a massive eye opener to me is that people never fantasize about how they will earn $1 million--they fantasize about how they will spend it.Felix wrote:The irony behind all this is that most people do neither. Wait -- am I freed from the yoke of government yet?
That Slate item was one of the few I have seen posted both to this forum and my Facebook page -- and on the same day. I am afraid its a conspiracy now. Yet again.

JohnnyH: Your posts are always so profound and insightful, I can't imagine any of them warranting deletion.

It is indeed a moving comic, especially when I'm thinking so much about having brats.
Good, glad we're in a agreement... Because the only thing lamer than censorship is the promise of it.secretwealth wrote:JohnnyH: Your posts are always so profound and insightful, I can't imagine any of them warranting deletion.

Good point--let me get out my "buy Viagra now" links for the forum.

Even for someone likely not the kids type, I find the dinosaur painting and time with wife very moving. Dammit, there's so much more to life than whatever it is my routine has become five days a week.
Thanks for sharing.

@JohnnyH He got you yesterday too?!?!?!
The comic strip is good but the whole speech is much better.
Thanks for posting the links

No, sshawn, yours was the only post that was deleted.
And, yeah, the speech was excellent. Thanks to prosaic for the link.

Yes! Throw those in the trash! Along with any other passionate discourses someone took the time to put to text about value of the human individual!secretwealth wrote:Good point--let me get out my "buy Viagra now" links for the forum.
Good thing the subject of the comic didn't work for the government or you might not have posted it. On that subject, is it possible for someone to feel this way when they do work for the "yoke" of government?
