Tiny House/Small House Resources

Post by jennypenny »

There's a lot of tiny house info on the forums, but I can't find a central thread with all of the links. Hopefully, we can use this one and then I'll transfer the good stuff up onto the wiki.

I'll start with my new favorite blog ... The Shelter Blog (includes sailboats, houseboats, vehicles, homesteading)

Tiny House Listings (real estate listings, but also has a blog)

Edited to add: Let's include Small House information as well.

Oh, I love these! I can look for hours.

My two favorite blogs are:

Tiny House Living

and

This Little House (almost entirely photos)

And on YouTube, I've enjoyed:

Tiny House Giant Journey,

Gone With The Wynns (more about RV living, but some good overlap)

and the documentary

Without Bound - Perspectives on Mobile Living (50 minutes)

Great topic! Some of my favorites:

Tiny House Swoon and Small House Swoon (both linked from Tiny House Listings blog).

We The Tiny House People documentary, discovered via this forum.

Tiny House Communities (lol, "The Napoleon Complex" tiny house village).

Apartment Therapy has a Small Spaces section.

Luxury tiny houses from Heirloom Custom Tiny Homes. I'm on the fence about whether a luxury tiny home defeats the purpose of simple living, but the designs are interesting to look at/think about adapting.

Annual Tiny House Conference.

I don't remember how I found it, but this is the first tiny house blog I read. I got completely hooked and read the whole thing and then kept up. It's not active any more, but it's a very good detailed chronicle of a Tumbleweed build from start to finish.

Other than that, faircompanies occasionally has some interesting original tiny house video material. I sometimes check the Tiny House Blog, but I don't like that it often just posts unedited sales announcements (although relevant to the topic).

The Dick Proenneke video "alone in the wilderness" is great.

Dude builds a beautiful cabin in Alaska. The video is available for free. Probably on YouTube even.

This site offers info on off grid living. Though most of the newer articles are hit or miss.

My biggest question is, how do you find a place to stay? There is almost no free land left in many urban or suburban areas, and rural areas aren't really ideal for me right now. Do most people stay in someone's backyard or skirt building regulations?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... nsion.html

A CEO with a net worth of $820 million has opted for the simple life by living in a trailer park instead of a mansion. Tony Hsieh, the CEO of Zappos, can afford to buy any type of abode that he fancies including the pick of plush estates. But Hsieh, who is known as one of the most frugal millionaires in the business community, chooses to live in a Las Vegas trailer park. ...

The Airstream Village also includes Tumbleweed Tiny Houses, wooden RVs that have about 130 square feet and do not have couches or kitchen tables. It was a vacant lot before he snapped it up and it's virtually unrecognizable since its makeover.

Haha, no need, I know it well. That place is a few blocks from my apartment, I walk past it every time I go downtown. It makes sense the amount of money he/Zappos is spending on the area if he's walking around it every day (it's about 1/2 mile from the airstream place to Zappos' office complex). They converted one old casino (The Goldspike) to a hipster bar with apartments in the old hotel rooms. One of the big hotels is now convention/open space, with the other hotel opposite it razed for parking. And all the old motels are fenced off, keeping the seedier elements out. The big question now is what they do with all them before they start collapsing. There's talk of extending the Fremont Experience, which would be interesting but costly. For now I'm happy to see mixology bars and record shops popping up rather than more 7-11's or Dottie's.
