I think podcast comments (on iTunes, etc.) are mostly about ratings -- I never read them. But I might go to the site and comment about a particular podcast if there is a small enough audience and I think the host really cares. I've found that hosts either respond directly or sometimes incorporate it into future podcasts, depending on the format of the show. Some of the more sophisticated are now allowing people to call in and leave a comment/message and then they will play a few in a later show or answer specific questions.

In some ways this harkens back to the kind of local call-in radio shows that were common in the 1960s and 70s, although better filtered.

A lot of the ones I listen to these days take the place of book reviews, as many authors now do a "podcast ciruit". You get a good summary of the content of a book and then can decide whether its worth your while to read it. It was really interesting hearing Ed Thorp recently, for example, talk about his life and his autobiography. Same with people like Kahneman and Dan Ariely. Some of these people are very old and you feel like you are getting the kind of wisdom only grandparents (or a Charlie Munger) can give. Barry Ritholtz, in particular, has done an excellent job tracking down people in the finance area and getting people to talk who might never share themselves in traditional media sources. (But for something really entertaining, listen to his interviews of the ever sardonic Scott Galloway of NYU/Stern.)

I feel like I should clarify that I wasn't talking about the ERE blog or others like it that have a wealth of timeless information. Blog's like jacob's and other info-heavy ones like survivor library are great resources.

I've also lost interest in many forums where most of the old posts are no longer useful. When this post resurfaced, I realized how unusual it is for a thread to seem dated on this forum.

I'm not against online businesses, but it seems like the more business-y the internet got, the less creative and community-oriented. The more flashy and entertaining the web became, the more passive and predefined it became. It now largely resembles cable television.
brute agrees. it seems a bit like FI - being independent of income seems to allow certain interesting tendencies and thoughts that a for-profit model wouldn't allow, and it doesn't require those little streamlining activities that add up to a commercial feel. ERE is one of the few places on the web where brute still gets that free spirit feeling. he's pretty sure that not requiring to make an income from the blog/website/forum allows jacob to just let it be, a freedom that Joe Moneyblogger doesn't have.

that's maybe one of brute's hopes for more widespread FI. humans will follow thoughts because they find them interesting, not because they think they can sell them.

I generally don't regularly read too many blogs anymore. There are a few reasons I can think of:

- Many of my favorite authors no longer post (Brave New Life, Lacking Ambition, Crawlingroad).

- A few others like MMM no longer draw me in like they used to because I've leveled-up on the Wheaton scale for their particular topic and no longer receive the same level of intellectual nutrition that I used to from their content. I still recommend them to others, though.

- I think overt monetization has taken a lot of the charm out of classic blogging. I'm not at all opposed to people making money from their work, but blatant affiliate link infomercials are a big turnoff.

- A lot of the blogs that I used to read were promoting a lifestyle I wanted but didn't have. Now that I'm no longer working full time, I have less of a need for escapism.

- At least on certain topics that I'm passionate about, I find more enjoyment generating content than consuming it.

These days I mainly do a lot of surfing looking for intellectually interesting posts and articles from any source, but even that can get tiresome. It's probably a sign that my pool of sources needs to expand. Or maybe I just need to find a new handful of blogs that speak to me.

If you missed his latest post, John Michael Greer of the Archdruid Report will be starting a new blog on the fusion of ecology and religion (ecosophia.net). He says he will be taking down the old blog completely in June.

Just FYI in case anyone wants to reread anything before it disappears into the ether.

@jp, even after being taken down, you can probably still read his old posts through archive.org

@jennypenny - Can you recommend any of your favourite articles relating to ERE?

I enjoy his writing but there is so much content and depth, I'm not sure where to start.

I normally love all of team Ritholtz blogs, I think their guys are great.
I find that recently they have been cheerleading the market a lot though.

Most blatant example:

http://theirrelevantinvestor.com/2017/0 ... ck-bubble/

Batnick speaks about how stocks did in Japan during the bubble, as if to say "yeah stocks are high today but can go even higher" (or at least this is what I understood as the meaning of the post).

The.. uh.. minor detail he forgets to mention is that from 1989 to today, Japanese stocks have returned (excluding dividends, to be fair) an impressive -50% in nominal terms approximately.

I like ritzholtz but you can tell he's a liberal and as an evil conservative; I find fault with many of his posts. for instance, he currently has a post up about wind energy and he favors it because he's a warmist even though you would have to bankrupt the country to use wind to power it.

I also recommend real investment advice, which is Houston advisor lance Roberts site, I figured out he's a trend/MA advisor; but he has great articles he posts.

and slope of hope, tim knight is a professional short trader; but his site covers all sorts of things.

Just added http://www.interfluidity.com/ to my "economics" blog feed reader. Lots of musings and he also aggregates other good links in posts. Lots of little quotable nuggets. (probably just added https://mathbabe.org to my list after finding it linked here: Wealth is about insurance much more than it is about consumption.)

Also, follow blog writers on twitter for shorter musings or links.

Lots of thoughts after going through some of the posts archived at interfluidity..

I too am a huge fan of interfluidity. He is very measured in his opinions and an eloquent writer. He updates very rarely these days, though. I could be wrong, but I also think his politics might rub against the prevailing mood of most people in this forum.
