I'll be in Chicago on Nov 27 (date is fixed). Given there's interest in a meetup is there anyone local willing to figure out where to hold it?

If I stay home (Wisconsin) over Thanksgiving weekend, I'd come down for this.

    I'm definitely coming to this.

I don't know where we should have it though. It's too cold now to do anything outside.

Want to just do it at my apartment? I live in Chicago in the Wicker Park neighborhood. I'm near the Blue Line, so it's easy to get here via public transit (or bike). Anyone who drives will need to spend 5-10 minutes looking for parking, but it won't be that bad. I have seating for nine -- eleven if we break out the camping chairs.

I'm open to suggestions too if someone has a fun idea of something else we could do in Chicago, but barring that, I'm happy to host.

I am definitely interested. Being Sunday, it would help if it started before or around noon to justify my 1-2 hour drive each way and for those who have to work the next day. Although, I think I feel a tingling in my throat...cough!

I think akratic has the best solution for keeping ERE true. The weather might up the $ factor in finding entertainment without creative ideas from the locals or a typical tourist walk in the cold.

However, I don't have any problem spending $$ on events like this since they are rare and I still work.

I live in Wicker Park. Wish I could make it, but I'll be out of town for the holiday.

We're one week out. So far it looks like we may have:

    - Jacob
    - Akratic
    - The Dude
    - C40
    - Bananastand

With Akratic being the only one who lives in Chicago, I suggest we leave it up to him where to meet (unless Jacob has some area limitations?). I'd be down for meeting at your apartment. That might be better than some settings such as a coffee shop, where we will feel like we're supposed to be buying something.

    I vote for Akratic's apartment.

I suggest starting at noon to accommodate The Dude + time seems to fly at these meetups.

Looking forward to this ERE meetup on Sunday!

It looks like people are showing up at various times between 12pm and 2pm. There will be no fixed schedule, so just show up whenever works for you after 12pm.

So far I've given my address to:

jacob, C40, The Dude, BananaStand, Luck12, ChicagoERE, and Seabourne.

Some people have asked what they can bring. I have popcorn, water, juice, hummus and pretzels. If people want to bring alcoholic drinks or other snacks that would be fine. It's not necessary to bring anything (the water and the popcorn are infinite!) but if you want to drink or you want to bring something to share with other guests, you're welcome to.

Tanks for the meetup everyone! I had fun and it is nice to put some faces/personalities to the posts/usernames. And thank you Akratic for hosting.

In the past (NYC meetup in particular) the participants wrote (within reason) long, chatty experiences of what happened, who said what, their personal high point, etc.... The last two meetup reports have been very subdued by contrast.

Participants, care to make us jealous? ;-)

attendance: akratic, jacob, The Dude, Seabourne + Kara, C40, Luck12, ChicagoERE

    approximate alcoholic drinks consumed:
    - The Dude: ~8
    - Seabourne: ~4
    - akratic, jacob, Kara: ~1
    - Luck12, C40, ChicagoERO: ~0

    approximate words spoken of total:
    - The Dude: 50%
    - Seabourne: 30%
    - akratic + C40: 10%
    - jacob + Kara + Luck12 + ChicagoERE: 10%

Now I'm not saying correlation is causation, and these numbers may be exaggerated, but I think there might be a pattern here...

Also you'd have to work *really* hard to get another group of eight people together where I speak more than the median person...

MVP: Kara with the homebrewed mead and beer, out frugaling the EREistas despite being a +1 guest of Seabourne, rather than a currently active member of the ERE community.

conversation topics: current jobs, ERE plans and timelines, post ERE plans, backgrounds, macroeconomics, investing, The Dude vs The Dude, the permanent portfolio, sailing, the importance of challenges in life, treason, homesteading, tiny houses, rent, real estate, current living situations, capitalism 3.0!, introversion, travel, job satisfaction ... and I'm sure there were other topics that I'm forgetting at the moment.

main reason to be jealous: we had jacob at the meetup!

Sounds really fantastic... I will, without doubt, be attending a meeting in 12.
