Does anyone have any favorite books about home repair? For those of us who aren't planning on going into the trades, it would be nice to have a one-volume guide to fixing common and not-too-difficult electrical, plumbing, and carpentry problems.

Someone on this forum did recommend a book called Home Comforts: The Art and Science of Keeping House, but that's more about housekeeping than repairs.

Readers Digest makes a pretty good home repair book. Check your local used book stores, you could probably pick one up for less than 10 bucks. The new ones are around 24 or so. I think they do a pretty good job at illustrating how a repair should go.

The one I use is Home Repair from Black & Decker: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/79390.The_Complete_Photo_Guide_to_Home_Repair.
(I believe there is a newer edition.)

This book has saved me hundreds of dollars because the illustrations are so clear that I have been able to put in a new toilet, do my own electrical work, fixed leaky faucets, etc. The book is fairly heavy and thick with great photos and explanations. Highly recommended for first time homeowners.

When I don't know how to perform a home repair, I usually look up the "Bricofiches" published by the Brico DIY franchise. (sorry, not available in English)

    French: http://www.brico.be/wabs/fr/bricofiches/index.do
    Dutch: http://www.brico.be/wabs/nl/bricofiches/index.do

There must be something better out there, but they're free, short and easy to understand.

Seconding the Black & Decker, I have an ebook scan I use as a reference...

Also, youtube is a fantastic resource.

At my house we have this big yellow hardcover book called "Complete Do-it-yourself Manual" by Reader's Digest. The book is most likely older than I am and I've almost never opened it, so I'm not sure how good it is.

Repairing home is a tedious task. It may take time upto several months and huge amount of money. If you have a personal guide in your hands- the home repair book, half of your task is simplified. Its a great thing to have while renovating. I will look forward to it.

My go to book is the Home Depot 1-2-3 for basic home repair and maintenance. Full of detailed pictures and instructions. Its one of the better references I have.

A second for the Home Depot book. Also, for those who could use some in-person instruction, Home Depot offers free classes at local stores on a variety of topics:

Some are useful, others are sales pitches for a particular product. However, it is best to confirm the internet schedule with store personnel!
